What 31 Mud Tire

Post by timmay556 »

I've saved my pennies and I have enough for some new tires for my hilux.

I'm looking at 31*10.5R15 because my lux is standard height.
I do 70% at least on the road so would need something that will last but would like a decent mud performance tier.

I don't want to spend 400$ per tire when I can get the Firestone Destination MTs for $209 at the moment.

I have been looking a little at the BFGoodrich and the Goodyear Wrangler.

Are they really worth the extra 150$ per tire?

(will be buying through Firestone as I have a 400$ voucher)

If you haven't yet got your Bridgestones then look at KL-71 Kumho's. I recently bought some of these at an extremely competitive price from a retailer due to the price offered on TradeMe.
They handle very well on-road, clear mud well and my last pair are lasting well after a year and a half.

I am pretty happy with my wear rate. I looked at this recently when I bought my new ones.
I've done about 30000 kms since I bought the rears and they have worn about 5mm. (They are now at 9.5 mm having started at 14.4.)

On the open road I travel quickly, the Prado typically gets cornered more aggressively than some passengers like and I regularly am driving over knife edged rock sometimes wheel spinning for my ski field summer and autumn maintenance work. Come Autumn the tyres spend about 2kms at a time looking exactly like my Avatar, and that's with chains on.

With all the gear I carry my SWB normally weighs in at 2.2 tonne.

Go the KL's

Yep, that's the same sort of deal. Makes the retailer hurt but that's the power of the internet and Tardme. Still bought mine from the retailer though but at the real price. A 28% discount.

Was talking to a retailer recently and the kumho distributor is doing some sharp specials at the mo. He quoted me a figure that was in the region of $30 under the regular retailer buy price.

He also said that apparantly people are getting up to 70k on these tyres if they're run at 40 psi on the road.

Once i can get my hands on some black desert rats, either a set of these or bighorns are going on my truck.

I had the Duelers (673's) put on Friday, and they definitly drive better then my old AT's!! Both at 50k's and 100ks. they arent as noisey as the old rubber as well :)
Only had a quick tout on some grass after work and they did well! Gonna rip in to some mud tomorow

I am MORE then impressed with these tyres. They are quiet on road and track well.
They take to dirt/grass/puhmis and have great bite even on normal PSI.
