Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
I'm in a dilema, I have an LN107 Hilux but the old 3L just doesn't do it for me. I really need it to tow and I have enough trouble with a 1/4 tank of gas and only me in it geting up Porters Pass in 2nd gear...
I know you can basically bolt on a 2.4 Surf turbo and manifold etc and get some good power, although is this reliable? and especially if I'm towing - is it worth it with the smaller turbo from the 2.4 Surf? (ie: craked heads etc)
I've also looked at the kits you can get from Aussie with the bigger Garrett turbo which seems to do the trick, but again, it's about 3 times as much as the first option - and at the end of the day, will it be any more reliable etc than the 2.4 option?
Thridly - there's the 1KZTe (is that it? The 3.0l DT) option, but will apparently set me back $7500 or there abouts.
Can anyone give me some good, sound advice on what to do and who to see to do it? I know I could prob just sell the Hilux and buy a surf with the 3.0 dT but I really like the double cab with the tray.....

Could look at a Lexus (1uzfe), these get a reasonable economy from what I've heard (mine doesnt
), or a Commy V6

70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
Thanks, not sure I want to go too extreme, but worth a thought.
Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
Could do a commie swap for just over 2k if you did it yourself. Or the hiluxes came out with a 1kz-te at some stage didn't they. Could just get later model, might even save yourself some money.

Bigger motor mate..... more cubes and even better more cylinders

Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
http://4wheeling.ca/board/showthread.php?t=111 there are many more articles like this around. For reliability and cost just turbo the 3l. You can always do a conversion later if you are not happy with the power, but the parts to do this are quite cheap and plentiful

Cool,
thanks for the info. I did have a 302w in my old ln30 surf which did the business, but had a hard time keeping it cool - and then there was the petrol bill. It went to Auckland (via TradeMe) in the end to a lady to tow her horse float - certainly had the power though.
Funny how there's 2 very seperate arguements to put the 2.4 turbo on to the 3L - people that haven't done it say it's a waste of time, but the people that have done it think it's great......I'm quite keen to try it myself, but there's always that niggling doubt. I think if it was to be done, it'd have to be intercooled - just to ensure I could keep the turbo as cool as possible.

Theres no right and wrong way mate..... you do whats right for you

Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
Yeah - will keep posting my progress so hopefully it'll help someone else with the same issue as I'm having. My engine is fairly mint (132k's) so I don't want to go buggering it up either.
Another frustrating thing is that the double cab utes that did come out with the turbo all seem to be (on Trademe) from $25k upwards....crazy money when you can get a good 3.0l DT Surf for under 10k
Decisions, decisions.....

these sell for around 3k, should bolt straight in then sell yours and get some money back

Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
Sweet,
thanks! That'd do the trick too. I hear you have to move the engine mounts back and try and accomodate all of the computer controlled bits like fuel and timing etc.
certainly worth a look.....

And yeah, Safari or a Cruiser would be the next best thing, but I have a dog and a wet dog smelling 4wd is never a good thing when it's your only mode of transport

Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
cheapest option for 1kz is to get crashed kzn130 from turners damaged and wreck rest of truck off and cover you're costs. thats what i did but ended up buying two and took all the good bits and sold what was left and now have a good spare engine and 5 speed 1kz conversion in my ln106 you just swap everything infount of seats and cut engine mounts off chassie and move them back then all you have to do is rewire the tail lights. took 2 weeks to do & in the end cost me nothing
& goes heaps better pulls up poters pass in 3rd on 33" mud tyres

Re: Help - Hilux LN107 - need more power!
Nice - that's one of my options - was watching a truck at Turners on Monday - it was the later shape (intercooled) but I stopped at $2100 - not sure what it went for in the end.
I don't suppose you're interested in selling your spar motor and box???

i got a 94 that had rolled- 5spd man recaro seats $1700 & 95 auto with water damage $2500. but make sure it's the kzn130 as the kzn185 has the drive shaft on the wrong side. & sorry keeping my spare as am modifying it to get more power out of it

you're welcome to come have a look at mine if you want to drive one before doing the conversion. just pm me

I have a 5L that is supercharged and dont run out of power. 4.5 diffs on 35s and it can't be killed in second gear. Plenty of low down power.
Drag a 1KZ off any day of the week
A friend of mine has done the same to his 3L and is up a whole gear towing a trailer up hill.
Cheers Richard
