21r to hilux gearbox

Post by g0nz0 »

Heyas, i own a Toyota powered zuki an am wanting to throw away the celica gearbox an replace it with a hilux box/case.
Wondering if anyone knows if the hilux's ever had a 21r block in them? if so i can find a bellhousing to mate the hilux box to the 21r i have. Still learning about Toyota parts etc so i thought this would be a good place to ask.

Cheers

Ok, hand me that bottle 8)

Right, thats better :) This is totally guesswork and without checking I can not confirm anything... but.

...The R-series engines bolted to G and W series boxes in Hiluxes - although 21R is a new one on me, as the R-series engines were popular in the US, not here... (In Hiluxes, anyway).

If your celica box is a W-series then you've got a good chance (not a guaranteed chance, just a good one :) ) that the W56 (IFS surf) or G52 (Hilux Ute) 5-speed will bolt to it with no further mods.

As I said, all guesswork, but based on facts... you need to pull the motor and take a photo of the inside of the bellhousing, or just compare it to this:

If it looks like that (that photo is taken from the gearbox side obviously, so you need to flip it in your brain before comparing :) ) then you're good to go with a 5-speed from a Surf or a Hilux

Hope that helps...

we tryed the surf box bell housing we have here off that LN61 and it doesnt match, but thats off the 2.4 deisel. would the bell housing off a 3y be the right one maybe ? to mate the 21R engine ? as we are looking at putting this surf box and transfer unit onto it.

No, the L series and the Y series motors are different to the R series ones for the big end of the bellhousing, but check the gearbox end, cos most of the bellhousings for those motors (especially the Hilux and Surf ones) will have the G or W pattern hole, as shown above. I would expect you would use the existing bellhousing, not a new one.

Failing that, would it fit an R-series gearbox (later model surfs)? Probably not, but worth a look.

If you still have no joy, buy a bellhousing from the US... they had nothing but R-series motors over there...

well thats a better start on what i had in mind. So im gunna knock around with some of those ideas. Hoping that i dont have to import one. A friend had a bellhousing made from an Ozzy company might look into that also. Thanks a tonne for the info btw.

The website below pretty much confirms that the R series powered the celica series an is a common Motor in the USA. The 21R was just a japanese model of the R series which was used in countries due to high demand for used motors, its also a nothing special motor too doh!. So celica + R series should mean i can use W or G series box. (thinking alowed here ). i still have to get off my lazy ass an crawl check my housing pattern. http://www.toysport.com/webpages/Techin ... _notes.htm
