Replacement bulbs... narva +50's, Bluepower or other??
Replacement bulbs... narva +50's, Bluepower or other??
As the title suggests, looking at replacing bulb, because, like other things on the Jeeps, the stock ones are crap.
Was referred to the +50's but after looking at some reviews, it seems theyre not what theyre cracked up to be. However the Narva "bluepower" seem to be flavour of the month at the moment, but at $60.00 a pair (appco), theyd wanna be worth it.
Does anyone have any insight to these, or alternatives? Seems Super Cheap do some, that are problematic.
Cheers

I ran the +50's in my diesel zuk and my old LJ71, the problem I found with the LJ was all the mud getting into the headlight, was looking at putting a sealed beam lights into that before I sold it and adding additional spotties/driving lights. found the +50's to be better than stock...

depended on the reflector behind the bulb, the Zuk had this fancy shiny pattern which make it really bright, better than the standard shiny surface on the old playdoh...it was better but the zuk was betterer if you follow my drift....

I don't know how jeeps wiring is, but if you're going to upgrade to bigger bulbs then upgrade the wiring too.
I'm going to do a complete rebuild of my lighting system in my 80 Series cruiser (only one headlight goes at the moment) to incorporate 100/90w and 130w beams and semi sealed lamps too with my own heavy wiring.
Also a regular clean of the lenses helps

Its not upgrading to a bigger bulb. Theyre still an H4 60/55w.
Yeah, one lamp wore a heap of nice muddy water a while back, so the whole thing needs to be taaken apart and cleaned.

badnuz where did you get the +90's from I have been looking here in Auckland but no luck so far.
+50'S are available in H4 and are 60/55 Watt, the +90's are also a 60/55 bulb so suitalble with vehicles such as my Surf which has polycarbonate headlights and I believe are available in H4.
Getting back to the original post the +50's will probably extend your range by another 10 to 15 metres over standard lights but will also give you a little more light out to the sides. +90'S or an HID kit would give you evn more light.
Get yourself a multimeter and do a check of the voltage at your battery with engine running at about 1100 rpm and also do a check of the voltage at the lights if more than 1 volt difference you might also want to consider relays to reduce the voltage drop at the lights.

DO NOT GET THE BLUE BULBS from SUPERCHEAP! I have a set in my DD Surf, they are miles worse than stock sealed beams
They are almost like a fog lamp, not bad up close, but no depth to them whatsoever..... mind you they were only about $15 each

Be careful with higher wattage bulbs. The WOF man may not like them and polycarb lens and reflectors dont. The HID ones are good but illegal unless the same headlight unit (reflector lens etc) on a up spec model had them factory. Crazy rules especially with the HID ones but thats how they sit at the moment.
As for the original question if you have crap on the reflector no bulb will make much difference

I think the rules were copied from Aussie as they have the same regulations.
If your vehicle has a single headlight (ie hi and low beam combined) HID is not allowed
If your vehicle has separate hi and low beams you can put HID in the high beam but not in the low beam
You are allowed HID in spotlights
advantage of HID is that a 35 watt Hid bulb produces the same amount of light as a 120 watt halogen with a lot less heat.
disadvantage is the kits are bloody pricey.
I am putting HID driving lights on the Surf and will just use +90's to brighten my low beam.
I have already checked voltage at battery and compared it with voltage at the headlights, there was only .3 of a volt difference.
+90's apparently do not create any more heat than a standard 60/55 watt bulb

yea tow bus, the headlights yes, not the fog lights. i put the plus 50's in the spottys but i think the arctic blues give a better light. i like the fog lights on my bus, probably cos living in the waikato i get the benifit from having fog nearly every morning

remember here people that you wont get any more "distance" out of your lights but you can make what yuou have got better. i find the arctic blue's much clearer and brighter. and they are about the same as buying the normal narva H4's anyway

Re: Replacement bulbs... narva +50's, Bluepower or other??
took my 80 for a wof at VTNZ yest with the +90s and they never said a thing.... The bigger bulbs do give a whiter light further into the lenght of the light pattern, giving a better view of all things further away
