I also had no trouble fitting a PTO - just had to shorten the D/S since it had come off a 60 series with 5spd box.

Hi Niblik, Yeah, my 40's body is not so flash. Mainly rust patches in the floor pan. My Flatmate is a panel beater and doesn`t rekon its worth trying to save.

I had played with the idea of trying to get it back on road but think I`ll just A-Frame it everywhere instead.

I almost bought a Fibreglass Jeep body to put on it but my flatmate talked me out of that too.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=57156086

Why do you ask?

Also, good to see you are back Ben, reckon you could post some pics on the PTO installation when you do it? Would be awesome cause I need something to follow. Cheers.

yeah, i'm not usin the front diff housin.. or the axles for that matter.. was hopin to hang onto axle for a little bit longer (2-3ish weeks) just to enable me to get the pto, power steer and bits i wanted off whislt still being a rolling body.. how soon ya need? sure we can sort something.. lemme know? :D :D

mnc

just askin as i have 2 40's on the go, 1 of which i a-frame around also. thought about tubbin the other with fibreglass too but not for $4500 from north island somewhere.. just from experience, i suggest if ya can salvage her, may be a good idea.. thats a large motivator for me to get my 2nd 40 all legal.. its a p.i.t.a to go to a trail head or river mouth, drop in and go playin, workin ya way along and then, bugger! :? have to go back or work in a loop to pick up the tow vehicle to get home.. if a mates keen to tow ya, tight! that'd save hassles..

good luck with it.. :D :D :D :D

adding to it

Post by wopass »

well after putting the new G box and transfer case in i decided in my infinate wisdom  to do the mod i have been thinking about for a while now, which is put the 60 series housings under the 40 :D

fabbed up some massive spring perches for making the housings sprung over then set about cutting all the old mounts and perches off the rear housing. measure and measure again and then weld new perches to the housing, get it all in place and clamped up with diff in etc, no real drama.

then to the front..... cut all the old mounts off that as well and measure up for the new perches to be welded on, here begins the head ache. where the 40 series spring sits on the housing is bloody inconvenient, sits a long way up the head so makes it interesting to say the least  consequently i have ordered some new sqare bottom U bolts for the front  thats about as far as ive gotten with it so far... will post some pics when i have it sorted

Thats normal for a 60 under a 40. The easy answer, fit coils to the front.
You can put the coils outside the chassis and the shocks inside the coils.
To equal the springover height at the rear you would probably use coils and shocks from a petrol 80.
I have used GQ front coils and shocks with a chev V8 for this but with less height required.

8) If your gona coil the front you might as well do the rear while your at it  before long you'll be like me

was in my mind but driving from hamilton to dunnyvirke and back with a massive car trailer on and a ute loaded on the way back, it was a bloody long day driving, left here 6am and got back home at 7.30pm

making more progress with the missile today, got my shock mounts cut off the old housing and welded onto the new one, waiting on the new U bolts from 4wd bits now to finish mounting the housing in propperly, then probly mid week for my axles to turn up then re build the long side ... getting tired thinking about it, :?

then i have to get drive shafts sorted and PTO sorted....

then shakedown trip up thompsons :D ....hope its all ok

hi wopass... was interested in seein how ya got around the spring perches on the 40 being narrower than the 60.. how'd ya get around the fact that the longer side has the extra 2 inches? :o centre it? does it affect the driveshafts much? ( i realise its only an inch, but still wondered  )

how about havin the perch and u-bolts being towards the pumpkin by an inch? did ya cut the diffs housing a bit? does the u-bolt still fit?

pics would be great..

cheers..

will post pics tomorrow,

just inthe process of finishing the front end now, new square bottom U bolts from 4x4bits(cheers warren  )cut to length as too long :? with modified cruiser top plates, kinda cut and positioned under the perch with some 10mm packer/bolt keeps, with modified surf rear bump stops with the rubber cut off on top of the spring to capture the U bolts and locate the spring pin..... etc etc.

yes its a bit of work  the rear was sooo easy and the front is such a pain in the arse... but fun  ...grinding and welding and cutting and welding, real good manly stuff

pics tomorrow :D

:D finally finished the gearbox/transfer case job off today by getting the drive shafts and support mount in and bolted up, gearbox support VERY ugly  but plenty strong ,couple bits of 10mm plate bolted to some box section which is welded to chassis rails, inside welds are VERY ugly as i couldnt see with helmet on so welding by feel :o but the welds that you can see on the outside look ok, and thats the main thing, cover it all in some mud and they will all look sweet

no pics yet untill i cover it in a liberal dose of black paint to hide all the ugly shit 8)

cant wait to get the front all finished off so i can take it for a flex and shakedown test

You don`t muck around do you. How much oil do you need to add to the gearbox to allow for the PTO gear?

i think its about 700ml from memory mate....i think if you get a 1ltr bottle of gear oil to add to your transfer case you should be sweet

Not yet, its down at a mates place getting bracket made up for A-Frame. Felt a bit lost today without it :( Then sort alternator and I`m done - let me know if any one has a spare 12V alternator suitable for an FJ40 lying around.

I`ve got to get drive shafts etc first too.

i might be able to help with the driveshafts i'll have to have a close look and see what i need.
i think i will only need the universal that goes onto the worm drive of the winch but to be honest that won't happen soon as i am such a good procrastinator
