TJ Parts for sale
TJ Parts for sale
Just decided to sell all my TJ spares, no real idea of values though so if you need anything you'll have to help me out with that or have something I need to swap. I have an almost complete FR accident damaged 2000 TJ Sport with soft top which i'll strip as parts as required. PS pump gone, Stg box gone, T'case (out of my other one) in bits, radiator damaged, otherwise pretty much all there. Its only done 46,000km so most parts are pretty good. The bodywork is gold, and other than the RF guard is straight and rust free.
Also have a fully rebuilt D30 front axle assembly with 4.88 gears and new ARB locker, complete to yokes, with a new in the box spare 4.88 gear set. Have additional standard flares, bumpers, end caps etc. new RR stg damper, as well, pretty much everything.
just send me a PM from time to time if you need something and i'll have a look what might be there, cheers, Gordon

Re: TJ Parts for sale
What gear ratio are the diffs ?
Re: TJ Parts for sale
Shoe wrote:What gear ratio are the diffs ?
They'll be standard 3.7's i guess? Its a D44 in the rear, D30 in front.
Re: TJ Parts for sale
My TJ with a D30 And D44 is 3.07 ratio which is hopeless . How much would you want for your two 3.73 ratio diffs ?
Or maybe I could bring a jack , park by yours and do a swap.

Oops, maybe the standard ratio is 3.07, whatever it is, the spare TJ will be standard. Its ex Japan if that helps. I'll have to run the VIN again and see what that says.
If you park next to mine, swap the diffs by all means, but leave my blower alone!
cheers
Re: TJ Parts for sale
shoe, what tyres do you have on with the 3.07?

Re: TJ Parts for sale
Even 31s with 3.07 on mine was noticeably overgeared. I think manual makes it more obvious than auto.

Re: TJ Parts for sale
XJ,
I have a 97 3 speed auto with 3.07 gears and I am running 31 inch tyres and it is an absolute slug on the road .
On hills are the worst as the dineasore chrysler 3 speed auto will only change down by tapping the brake which means you lose even more momentum. It is real embarrasing when you get passed on a hill by a female driver in a 2.4 diesel surf towing a horse float with two horses in it. I boot the TJ and nothing happens. The only way to get the TJ to go is to tap the brake pull the auto into 2 floor it and hope for some semblence of a catch up .

Re: TJ Parts for sale
OK, so the auto doesn't mask it
My manual would only take 5th on the flat when already up to speed, and the gaps between the lower gears were bigger than necessary.

Re: TJ Parts for sale
Slight thread-jack going on here, sorry Gordon.
The brides TJ with 33's on and 3.07 in the auto was also slow-ish off the mark, but not too bad. It hung a bit between 2 and 3 around the 55-60km mark, which was a PITA. Before putting the 33s on her's, it had 31's and performed well both on and off road (when i wasnt drowning the transmission!)
Ive also still got the 3.07 in my manual and although, as Fen has said, you can really only go 5th on the flat, and maybe up some slight hills. My low end is sweet. 1,2, and 3 are great either in low or hi-2, hi-2 will pull 90 easily in 2nd. Keeping it straight while doing so is another story. Going over 100kmh in 4th or 5th is a struggle, which is great, stops me getting in trouble with the law.
Heres a confession.... i spent ages being a tight bugger and using 95, and didnt even bother with 5th gear at all, which of course affected it performance horribly, the change to Shells V-power made an astronomical difference in power output (as it would!) and subsequently gear changes.

Surprised with your assessment, mine is 3.07 with 32" tyres and it takes off very smoothly even on a hill. When was the last time you had your transmission fluid and filter changed? Something is not right with yours. Coming up on Bombay Hills from Hamilton, I can remain at 100 km/h very comfortably (and it all shifts "automatically" as it should). Off the mark its a little sluggish (well, compared to my wife's 4.7 V8 Grand it is) and a regear is definitely on the cards, but its not as bad as you suggest.

Re: TJ Parts for sale
Mine's on 35s and 4.88s and is the most sluggish vehicle I've ever driven on the highway. The trans has been done twice as has the TC and it still won't kick down until the gas hits the floor. It uses more gas on its own than the 8.1L does when its towing the TJ on the trailer. I've had it dynoed and its putting out the horses it should, actually gained 20Kw when the snorkel was disconnected. Just those big tyres and the 2000kg weight of I suppose, a lot of it in the long arms etc. will be unsprung weight too. Even the couple of standard TJ's I've had were no performers though. A blower might be the answer!
Re: TJ Parts for sale
As a new TJ Jeep Owner as of 3 days ago, I have Just put Silverstone 31x10.5x15 (just short of 32 actually) and what a slug now. She s only done 55000km and full service. I can actually see the fuel gauge move now while driving .... scary. Used to own a Cherokee two trucks back and it was better on fuel and power.

This IS scary, i am looking at buying a 2003 manual 5 speed and doing the the same or more, the comments on here about the performance of the TJ with mods has made me wonder.

Re: TJ Parts for sale
Scary, yes, livable definitely
Just took the cat out and it's a little better rev wise.
Buy the Manual, that is what I should have done. manuals much better in Low and fuel economy. Mine is the early NP231 3-speed auto. It's like a run-away train in the mud, fun to be had aye
You buy a Jeep for the "What it can be factor" Lots of Modifications if you have time, I am working through mine. Looking at Atlas Transfer Case reduction kit at the moment from the States

and watch the deep water very carefully... $2500 if you ingest through the top of the trans on the auto... been there done that... twice!

Had the wifes Tj on 31's, and both my old XJ's on 31 and i can def say that the opposite was indeed the case regarding the power down low. The top speed in the 4sp auto was higher, but fuel consumption was pretty much spot on. In fact, we took her TJ (on the 31's) and my TJ on 33's to the far north (hers auto, mine manual) and our fuel consumption was nigh on litre for litre, hers over the trip up used about 5 litres less.

Get bigger tyres.
There are some "how to" writeups about extending the breather on the trans (which apparently is about only 1 inch high stock) but ive just had a quick searh and cant find it. ill google it later and see what pops up.
If youre needing to hold your breath, get a snorkle too mate!
This was deep enough to do the first $2500

And yet this didnt harm the old Chok'ee at all!

Re: TJ Parts for sale
oh god lord where does one begin!!!???
See, part of the Jeep "experience", a right of passage if you will, is having things occur that youre NOT aware of, and then frustraing yourself silly trying to find out what it was that went west, and then how to fix it.
It would be mightily remiss of me to take all of these experiences away from you.
