this morning was productive.. removed the 6 body mounts and dropped out the diesel tank.. what a bloody mission the tank is!

awkwardly jimmied in there... lift body and 'pop', out it came... victory :!:

did the duty today of delivering body to guard fabricator , although, the back of my missus lantra ( has lights and towball ) was slightly lower than low...

two of us lifted the body into his garage.. really light, surprisingly.. and no, no pics of the lift! :lol:

then on to mates (thanks h2olova) to waterblast crap from inside chassis rails and rest of chassis parts prior to puttin in the garage and tearin all bolted items off to prepare for a painting..

p.s.. i like the whole go-cart look... chilly on a snowy day tho..

we were just checking for fit. But i'm sure Niblik just likes being up to his elbows in 20 year old hub grease!! We (Niblik) have decided to fit the complete 60 series diffs front and rear so now we get to pull it all to pieces again. good practice-Niblik will know what hes doing by the time we are finished!! :lol:

knowledge is priceless.. :lol:

the 60's axles are also approximately 50mm wider than the 40's so this could come in handy at a later date.. (read:extreme conditions) :twisted:

if i wasnt goin for a bit of width in axles too, i would have just mounted dics and hubs onto 40's housings.. :wink:

a bit more progress..

got the chassis all de-loomed, motor removed (damn easy when usin a forklift :!:

), and anything that was bolted on became 'bolted off!' :happyjump:

then when gettin down to removin some rivets like the ones holdin the front triangled parts for the front bumper, found the rear chassis rail and angled support was less than below par, so, not wanting to do a half ass job (like the po had done) removed rear rail and suspect angled part. notice the heavy duty crack... :shock:

classy..

rear bar off... tricky bit of kit..

now the plan of attack is to do a mock up of where the 60's axles and spring locations are gonna sit.. i want to put these on to gain 50mm width... will add an inch to each chassis rails spring mount rather than narrow the spring perch on the housings by an inch as this mod will add stabilty and i'm dubious about the welding/cutting on the housings... want to sort these mounts prior to sandblasting, probably anyway, then can paint..

Have I missed something? I thought this was going to be a non-roadgoing truck? I like where this is going, but I'd really want to make it legal for all the work you're doing...

Also, consider keeping the springs as far inboard as possible to allow for flexing up

exactly why i left the springs where the were and moved the perches, with the springs closer together it will have better flexabilty, maybe a little less stable on the road but.....who gives a shit about road handling :twisted:

By using the 60 series housings and springs we gain about 2 inches overall in width. By doing this how much flex are we likely to lose? Surely it can't be that much.....can it?

Its not how much you're loosing, its the fact that you are

I fight for every inch of extra flex I can get... so I would never outboard springs just because it was the easy option, unless it was temporary.

you can work out how much extra flex you'll lose, simple geometry. I'll draw a pic if I get a chance...

So better to alter spring perches than body mounts? I'm a bit iffy welding diff housings. I heard they can warp, which is the main reason we decided to keep the 60 springs. But if someone can tell us otherwise..................

The LC housings should be ok... pretty beefy. If you have an old diff, bolt that in first to be safe as it will strengthen the area around the pumpkin while you do the drivers side perch... the passenger side will be fine if you take your time and let it cool between runs.

If you're not comfortable with doing it then drag it out to the shed sometime and bring beer

(Although I'm pretty busy this week and probably a lot of next week - my timetable clears up after that)

]:-) sounds good.. if i choose to go this way (chassis away gettin blasted at mo..), what would be the go with the u-bolts, seeing as the perches have to come in on the housing by an inch each side, the pumpkin would incroach on springs etc, how would i get around the mountin of the u-bolts? would they seat correctly without gettin in the way of the diff head removal/replacement aswell as not being lowered more to give a seat for u-bolts and diminish the ground clearance issues..? if you even understand what the hell i'm tryin to say... :shock:

do you sorta know?

pretty much, i want to be able to access my diff head easy for a rebuild with lokka and not suffer on ground clearance. u-bolt filp kit is on the cards too..

any info would be greatly appreciated..

cant recall how i did mine.. will go look and take fotos.. my u bolts are up the other way. seemed very easy.

Make sure you line up your driveshafts when you reweld the perches.. mine caused troubles when we didnt get it right

just on a side note. i think i should put bump stops back in the front. i bent my shocks when i broke my shocks off after doing jumps. mounts now made of 30mm solid rod!! not pipe

Go in to Bellamy and East and talk to Anton about getting custom U-bolts made... they will bend new ones up for you to suit.

PS: How often do you pull your front diff? When you do, you're generally stripping the front axle anyway so undo the u-bolts and roll the axle out from under it first...

i used 60 series U bolts that i bought from 4x4bits,seem to be sweet so far

no worries there fella... shes gonna be a road legal monster... my other 40,'ole rusty' is the a-frame crapper... this new 40 i'm buildin will be a great rig to do trips to coast or wherever.. :!:

as for progress on the 'keeper'...

took 60 into h2olova's work today and took out the radiator and anythin that will stop us liftin out the motor,gearbox and transfer in one swoop... also removed pto in anticipation of projected sale..hopefully. 8-O

will be gettin the forklift onto this soon with pictorials to follow... that and the newly blasted frame hopefully... :!:

One thing we forgot to do was steamclean the engine :scratch: .....what a greasy POS this thing is. But that will be the first stop once engine removed. On the trailer and down to see my friendly mechanic who just happens to have an awesome steamcleaner :thumleft:

I was thinking that we should start a new thread. We all know different people in different trades, can be real handy when doing a build etc. I'll go and start it right now.

ok..

did a bit of a mission with h2olova and another of our chums the other night.. pulled 90% of the parts needed/wanted, out of the 60 and sorted..

our chum, phil, took the doors and a few other bits as he has a 60..

h2o was able to utilise a few 'small' items like bonnet stem holder upper thingy and stuff.. seen here red handed with tryin to pilfer bits and lookin rather devious... :wink:

as for the bits i wanted, they've been filed away or palletised for cleaning/organising.. this 3b and connections are filthy as and aregettin attention tomorrow from a steam cleaning.. :roll:

as for chassis... hmmm... paint it yellow? dunno, but its all go to get it back tomorrow.. glee :!:
