I painted the 40 using the compressor I've got last time - I could do one area at a time but I was forever waiting for it to catch up. Thanks for the gun offer... I think I'm all sorted... just need some serious time in the garage b4 the weekend ;-)

*Thanks for the comments*

Not much done today... put back in the fuel tank and part way through putting back in the seat mounts. The back seat is bolted in. Feeling a bit tired ;-)

I'll put up some more during the week.

Things seem to have slowed right down. Last week was spent sorting the rest of the body panels, which were all fairly shot but I haven't been able to find good replacements for so rather than delay things because of waiting on replacements to turn up (from somewhere) I've fixed them up.. they'll get marked anyhow no doubt. I've still got to piece it all together and finish putting on the roof and door. One final bit of fabrication to do (shock tower) and then I'll be sorting some wiring, fluids, and getting it all running again in the hope of hopefully getting it certified next week - time permitting.

Some photos...

The sad state of the rear lower doors:

Passengers side door:

(this was better than the drivers one!)

And some of the painting... fiddly when you're trying to paint several panels in a confined space.

okay... I finally got the vehicle running today and took it for a quick drive around the block to try out the brakes and steering... a quick question however - what causes a shudder in the power steering? It's a reasonable vibration that I feel in the steering wheel and pedals at low speeds and when it's sitting there!

I'm wondering if I've connected the high/low pressure lines around the wrong way of could it be the pump not having enough pressure? The high pressure line is currently in the hole towards the front of the pump.

Any thoughts???

This is a 70 steering box, the pitman faces backwards not forwards like your one, inlet and outlet should be the same though?

Cool. Thanks for the photo. I'll double check tomorrow. I've been reading up and it sounds like it could be air in the system.

Finally out of the garage again... Firstly took the 40 for a drive to fill it up with fuel last night - no dramas except the front brakes weren't anything spectacular with the rear locking up before the front. Brought new pads for them today and I'll be removing the discs tonight for machining tomorrow. I took a couple of shots while it was out of the garage today.

Painted up the rims last night and gave it a polish... not looking bad considering I don't think I went crazy with the prep.

Image

Still have to put the winch etc back on. I may just put the old bull bars back on for now. I've run out of spare time and we have a few projects under way on the house.

Image

PS and replacement shock setup..

And on the underside..

Hopefully I'll get onto the certifier later this week and sort out a time for next week.

don't mean to put a downer on your build but alarm her, immobolise her, electrify her and get a club. Soon to be brother in laws mate was telling me he did the same to his 40 in welly - (2 years rebuilding it and it was mint) gone from outside his house while he was home!!!

Funny you should say that... I had my last one stolen 2 days after getting it cert and warranted. It was never recovered...

Did all the same things last time around (cage, bars, paint). Never took any photos of it after rebuilding it but this was the web page that I put up back in '05 (http://scwebdesignz.com/landcruiser). Generally if someone's after something they'll get it. Had my motorbike stolen from my garage earlier this year... grrr. All I can do is to try and slow the process down for them ;-)

Hope you don't mind the thread jacking but you are right about people getting something if they want it no matter what you do. I guy I used to work with from England told me his BMW touring bike (I think they are the heaviest model of bike you can get to) was taken from his garage. It was single access and the bike was in front of his station wagon so they had to carry the whole thing over over his car and out. They did this at night, without anyone seeing or hearing, his room was next to the garage, AND, they didn't leave a scratch (a few boot prints though) on his car...

Okay... another question - should the steering naturally return to centre? I've been driving the vehicle a bit over the weekend and one thing I noticed that I was struggling to keep up with the steering when you do a U turn (or similar). After driving it a bit more I realised that if you turn into a corner and take your hand off the wheel it continues in the direction it's turned... no more natural return to centre. I'm not sure if this is a WOF/LVV issue but it doesn't feel quite right. I know you can get the return to centre dampeners for 4WD's, but there could be a couple of other things at play here, like:

    - wheel alignment has been done with the eye-cromoter (technical term for by looking at the wheels and saying they look about right)
    - I've adjusted the preload on the PS box too much
    - I've no steering dampener fitted.

Has anyone who's done a PS conversion experienced this, and does anyone know if it a WOF/LVV issue?

Here's a photo of the old bull bars... They'll be replaced with something new that will tie into the side bars at some stage.

Image

The brakes still aren't that good. I've put in the new pads and tried to get a mobile disc machining service to do the work but they decided they wouldn't be able to fit their machine to the cruiser. To take it in to ABC in Wgtn they quoted $300 for an on the vehicle machining job (eek!) I'll phone around as I was hoping to just take the discs in to get machined but when I had the hub off I relaised that you had to punch out each of the studs... and the first one I tried didn't budget that easily so I reassembled the whole thing.

I know! They quoted $50 for discs off the vehicle and $300 when I called up the following day for doing the job on the vehicle, hence why I'll be shopping around ;-)
