Is this shaft good or toast?

Post by Andrew1706 »

This is the diff head side of the long side driveshaft from my 80 series.

History: Lots of driveline backlash resulting in stripped axle flange and cv spline. Wear on opposite cv spline and flange although still meshing.

I'm replacing with new cvs and flanges but now I wonder if this is okay.

The short side shows slight wear but not as bad the long side.

I've rebuilt the whole diff minus diffhead and my argument is if/when I fit an air locker then the head will be rebuilt then and of course will have to replace the axles then?

Thats fawked, look at the difference in the size of the flat on top of the spline between the worn area and the rest. Chuck some better ones in... my 2c

Thats a bummer Andrew, all starting to mount up, will need to have a close look at mine.
Would pay to check the spider gear that the axle fits into.
Have sent you a PM.

needs to be a nice fit otherwise fretting will occur. once there is backlash the combination of all the backlash in the drive train and the sudden application of power will result in breakage. sure might not happen in toytoa but bloody land rovers are shocking for it!
