West Coast ORE trip 11, 12, 13 September

Post by albundy »

Running a trip to the West Coast on Fri 11th, Sat 12th and Sun 13th September. Staying at Goldsborough campground. Click on link for directions from google maps.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=stafford+loop+rd+nz&sll=37.926868,-95.712891&sspn=49.798439,67.324219&ie=UTF8&ll=-42.674903,171.124377&spn=0.005948,0.008218&t=h&z=17

Basically you head to Kumara, before you get there turn left onto the Old Christchurch rd then right onto Duffers Creek Rd then left onto Stafford Loop rd, head down a bit, campground on right.

This is a standard DOC camp ground with water, BBQ facilities. It is a nice area, central and cheap. $6 adults, $1.50 kids.
Please bring a sack of firewood as there is minimal dry wood there. The idea is to arrive on the friday night so we can spend time 4wdriving on saturday, not travelling.
Tracks will include:
Sat: Mt Greenland: Grade 4. No Name Rd and Cockeye creek. Gr 3.
Sun: Napoleons Hill and Waipuna Tunnels gr 3. There will be a$10 access fee per truck for this as we will be entering through private land. The cocky will give us a little tour of some historical stuff like new mines he has found, the old cemetry and township etc.
Home by 6-7pm on the sunday evening.

You will require camping gear (don't forget it rains like hell on the coast), a sack of firewood, food and fire water (booze), warm clothing and wet weather gear.
Your truck will require: EssentailGood tread tyres, AT minimium (Mt's prefered), snorkel, rated tow hooks front and rear (I will inspect trucks so don't bother coming if you don't have them), at least one tow strop or rope.
I would like you to have but not essentialfire extingusher, first aid kit.

I will take a chainsaw, if there is another one available please bring it. I will also bring the trifor winch and cable.

My number is 027 591 3565 if anyone wants to discuss this further. I will be leaving around 5pm on the friday so could meet at Springfield and go over in convoy if dudes prefer.

Also handbrakes and kids are welcome. My two boys are looking forward to it.
Al

This will most likely be the last one I do privately this year to the coast. UI have two other club coast trips to do plus the Reefton Challenge in early october. In January (one of the last three weeks) I will be running a 7-10 day safari trip in Central Otago if you are interested. Otherwise you are going to have to wait until March for a private west coast trip.

Not really. As with all trips on this forum, you get twenty wannabes and only about 8 actuals. 10 trucks is no problems to manage. Biggest trip I managed was 23 trucks.

Seems some may be dependent on costs for this trip.
Campground is cheap. Refer to first post. You may decide not to pay the fee as most Kiwis I know consider their taxes as payment enough.
I run a Safari on 35" with no turbo. I use about 2/3 a tank to get from Chch to Hoki. Fuill up in Hoki. That fill will last until I fill up again to head back to Chch. So in all about 2.5 tankls of diesel used.
When I had my V6 terrano the fuel use was similar.
Hope some of you can use this a guide to work out if it is affordable for you all.

Hey Al. I'm down as a wannabe for the moment. Like others will have to check the bank closer to the time. Hoping to take my old man as he gets back from the emerald isle at the start of Sept so he should be good for some diesel money and KM's
When I was younger he always said he couldn't wait till I could drive to and from the coast so he could read the paper or doze. I just never mentioned the fee

I would be keen to tag along with the missus and kids if theres still enough room now.
Have all the necesary gear. Can bring another saw if needed, cuts through fallen trees like a hot knife through butter.

Just got one Q tho.... I have hooks up front but is the factory D hook on the back of the nissan patrol/safari ok..?

PM sent. Don't forget the sacks of firewood guys. I called into the campground on my way home from Kopara on Sunday and there was definitely no dry wood anywhere around. I won't be able to leave until late that afternoon as I have uni classes allday which I forgot about. Reckon my ETA into the campground will be about 7-8pm. So a convoy over will have be minus me. The campground is real easy to find though.

How about meeting at Springfield for a 6pm departure. Too late, too early??? It will only take a couple of hours to get to the campground. There is going to be shit loads of mud after all this rain, I hope we get good weather over there next weekend.

Good luck with the trip Al. They just sent us back to Chch this morning as it was too wet over there for work. It's been raining cats n dogs since Sunday when we arrived and is sposed to continue over the weekend too. Had a good dump of snow through Arthurs today and the Lewis had a sprinkle too.
Apparently September is their wet season.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Just looked at long range weather forecast, we may be in luck with a high pressure that could head over from Oz, all going good. Take good wet weather gear anyways as it is raining constantly up until then. Don't forget the fire wood, we will need it. Boys are looking forward to trip, so am I. remember: rain, hail sleet or snow, we GO!

Am happy with shackle. You could always through a tarp over the front to act as a blind, seen this done a few times. We could always tow you through the deep shit with blind on.
