Re: Hawkes Bay Tough Truck Challenge
We had a forken excellent weekend...
Lots of laughs, smiles, hard driving, mud, lots of skids and a few swear words
A few of the bog holes were just truck killers.Deep as, the only way through was to winch them(for our team anyway). As Jerry said 2 of our team were knocked out with stuffed clutches. But not the 40s....
I had over heating dramas all weekend and a flat tah sat evening.
Big thanks to my winch bitchs Marty on sat and Graham on sun.
Cant wait for the next one...

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Re: Hawkes Bay Tough Truck Challenge
Yeah! fawkin awesome event! Much harder then our tracks at the Costa plenty Tuff truck, now we know what we have to work towards for the next one.
We had plenty of electrical dramas in the Jalopy, fried relays, melted fuses, buggered solenoids, but it still basically kept going
Our other Hilux team member busted two cv's and rope jumped of the pto drum and jammed, also overheated, ( I see Longfields in his future
) the Rangy in our crew went pretty well except for the last stage, overheating and dead fuel pump, very heavy truck for a poor little 4cyl to tow out of the stage and back to camp!
If I'm going to do more of these style of events, we'll be making a few changes to the truck, rear mounted winch and vastly improved winch speed are needed, mount the alternator higher, and try and keep a bit more mud out of the engine bay, may have to put some inner guards back in
All in all a very cool event, and congrats to Pete, Sarah, Ben, Bens dad, Jeremy and Jack on a well deserved win

Re: Hawkes Bay Tough Truck Challenge
Thanks fullas! It was an awesome event and we had a blast! It was kinda like a winch challenge (which is what we're used too), but with two extra cars + driver & co-driver and no time to wait and re-group in-between stages. Some of the stages were very technical and very cool to drive (with a few real 'hold-your-breath' moments).
Thanks to Pete & Sarah for the invite, and to Jack my co-driver for keeping me (or more often getting me) out of trouble, being our team navigator and always getting stuck in and organising us all.
Of-course a big 'job well done' should go to the organisers and all their helpers for putting on one heck of an event and a great weekend out 4wding.

Finally back home
Anyone want to do some clean up work??? My poor trucks dirty
Anyways, what an awesome event, was everything it was cracked up to be and more!!!!
The bog's were deep, the hills were steep and it was just luck of the draw as to which track you got given
Started 15 stage's, 5 on Saturday during the day and 3 at night after the compulsory stop then 7 Sunday morning between 6am and 11am
DNF'd one stage at 11pm Saturday night as we made the call that it would probably have been the end of the event for Jeremy's truck, and would have definitely left my zook on the trailer for the rest of the event, Ben might have been ok, but would have been marginal. Later we heard one Chev powered truck seized through lack of oil pressure on that hazard while almost verticle, under water, getting the winch set up
We had a pretty mixed group of trucks, but that wasn't an issue, as we were all self recoverable, and had Ben's monster PTO to bail us out if thing's went wrong. As it turned out, i can't think of one time other than a few quick snatch's where our trucks weren't all in use winching or driving in the hazard. As soon as one winch point was free, the next truck was using it
Basically, I think the result was due to treating the event as an endurance event so driving the trucks sensibly i.e two attempts at something then out with the winch, awesome team work, being clever about the deep bog's, and definitely luck of the draw on hazards
Big thanks to our team, Jemery, Jack, Ben and Paul for the awesome effort. Learnt so much from Jack
Good fun

The tide mark's tell the story:

If you follow the line in this series, you can see that the entire rear end of the truck was under water up to thr front of the rear wheel while winching out of one of the bog''s:
