aptor 700R — $7,599
A very popular, very capable trail bomber, the Raptor 700R is the best selling sport quad for a reason — it handles well and is a great all-around performer in almost any terrain. The big additions for ’09 are new, adjustable SOQI piggyback shocks with a slightly longer stroke for a more comfortable ride, updated styling, a more rider-friendly thumb throttle and a digital meter that displays speed, trip meters, odometer, clock and engine indicators. The basics include EFI, a steel and aluminum hybrid frame, aggressive styling, a high-revving powerplant that can hit 9000 rpms, dual engine counterbalancers for smoothness, electric starting that engages in any gear, reverse and an adjustable brake lever. Variations: SE model ($8,199) gets tougher looks, a wave-type rear brake rotor and GYTR front grab bar and heelguards. Our Take: One of the very best trail quads — period! Compare To: KTM 525 XC, Polaris Outlaw 525 S.
Engine/displacement: 686cc four-stroke single
Intake: EFI
Transmission: 5-speed manual w/reverse
Front suspension: Dual A-arm, 9.1 inches
Rear suspension: Swingarm, 10.1 inches
Seat height: 32 inches
Length/width/height (in.): 72.6/46.1/44.5
Claimed dry weight: 396 pounds

TRX700XX — $7,999
Making its first appearance in 2008, the TRX700XX is one of only a few true sport ATVs equipped with independent rear suspension. It also has a 44mm fuel injected throttle body, which provides the lightest thumb throttle tension of any sport quad we’ve tested to date. It leans to the heavy side, yet matches and, in some cases, exceeds acceleration and top speed numbers of lighter competing brand machines. It comes with a steel frame with removable subframe, a unique centered transmission design, a large sculpted seat, high-impact urethane skid plates, in-gear starting ability, and 11-inch rear wheels, which provide plenty of clearance for IRS A-arm travel. Variations: New Metallic Black color with graphics (Shown) available for $300 more. Our Take: This Baja race proven sport quad is right at home on wide, straight trails, eats up rough terrain and exudes in all-day comfort. Compare To: Polaris Outlaw 525 IRS.
Engine/displacement: 686cc four-stroke single
Intake: EFI
Transmission: 5-speed manual w/reverse
Front suspension: Dual A-arm, 10.5 inches
Rear suspension: IRS dual A-arm, 9.3 inches
Seat height: 33 inches
Length/width/height (in.): 73.9/46.3/45.4
Claimed wet weight: 505 pounds

how much riding is to be done?, mx or trail? been riding a 08 kxf 450 and thats a whole lotta bike, great mx bike, not so good for trails, in my opinion 2 wheels are safer than 4 unless, i have been only riding for a year or so and down south here, there is trail rides every weekend, i personally wouldnt have the confidence to get on a sports quad and flog it unless i was on the beach and all the rides i have been on i would have only seen 1 or 2 quads

i always thought a quad would be sweet, that you can load em up with a bit a gear and do over nighters etc, fishing rods, chili bins, fishing trips through the dunes, get a 4x4 quad and you have a mini 4wd.... but not realy... :?

difference is that the 125 is wound on all the time where as the 450 has the gogo to turn on when needed
go the 450

Friend of mine had a YZF250, soon realised he was gay and bought a YZ250.

Had one day on it and ended up with a broken wrist and leg.

Doesn't matter the bike, they all sound the same when I drive over them

Just kidding, I value my life a little too much to get on a two wheeler although I've only ever been offroad on a Honda 400cc quad which was heaps of fun.

Would love to try out a bike but I think I need to build up more strength before I go two wheeling!!

Ive has a couple of quads for the same reasons. still give you the opportunity to hoon round and play but they are still useful for going fishing or hunting etc

Everyone has their story on what's the best. But I think it's more to do with what you want it for, then go from there?

Image

The Raptor 700R would be my pick for a cheap 2X4 play thing.

But it's funny coz I own a Can-Am Renagade 800. I can keep up with the Raptor no problems. At top speed there's nothing in it. Getting to top speed, the same. But if you wanna go fast round corners nothing beats the 4X4 on the ground. And at the flick of a switch that's what it gives you. It's a rush. (ask Mike from here  ) And on the otherside, you can get through naily offroad stuff easily when the Raptor struggles. (a mate owns one)

Honestly. The latest Renagade is a weapon. And you have the best of both worlds. BUT, and there's a big but.

The extra cost of the 4X4 and the extra weight (it doesn't like to much air) plus the frame ain't strong enough either. These things I know coz I've owned a couple over a few years. They can kill easy to. Never forget that.........

My first quad was a Polarise. I don't know a lot about the new ones. But the one I owned was tough as!!!

My 2cents worth is.
Go for the Raptor mate.

Nice.
How many hours has it done?
Does it have a kick start for back up? Not that you should need it.
Is it air or water cooled? I hear the air cooled ones have issues.
Does it have reverse? Can be a pain without it.

The following pix are the reason for saying these Can-Am quadbike frames are shit. Yeah they say the steel is some super strength shit blah blah. But when it comes down to it. They bend, easily.
I did this doing about 20k up a sand trail, turned my head to check my mate following took the same turn.
While checking I was sideways in 2 wheel drive. As I turned again to look forward I was 1 foot away from the front right wheel hitting a 4 inch thick fence post. It stopped me in a big hurry. All I can remember, was doing this upside down star fish in the air while trying to hang onto the handle bars, thinking, whoa, that was close!!

The frame was a right off. I keep it to remind me how these things can throw you.

I still love my Can-Am. I just know it's limits.

Unsure of hours, air cooled and no reverse. Its more a racing quad. Will have to check on kick start as ive never used it ;)
