clubauto.co.nz ....??? opinions???

Post by xj »

Ive seen their ads all over the TV recently so thought that id take them to task on their talk of covering modified vehicles.

I sent them a quote request with all the mods (lockers, bars, winch, sus lift, body lift etc etc) listed and at a value of 20K. (spent more on it than that!!) Theyve come back with full cover at $663.77c a year, $500.00 excess if i prang it, $2000 excess if its stolen.

Anyone have any thoughts.

BTW theyre underwritten by Tower. Im currently insured through IAG via BNZ. We wont speak of mods there. (ahem) Insurance through them is $450.00 per year, for an insured value of $10K.

did the quote specifically include offroad cover?

The quote I got from Barleys a whilst ago was around the same with a specific offroad and fire levy cover, the excess for this was 1000 offroad from memory......, stolen etc was only 500.

I'm currently with Tower and have had no problems with them.

I have responded to theim by asking what the cover entails. Have explained that im with NZFWDA etc etc. Will see what they come back with. If your with Tower then there a chance that its going to be the same cover as (already mentioned) these guys are underwritten by Tower.

You wont actually know how good or bad an insurance company is until you have to do a claim.

Damn straight. AMI were pretty damn good when i had a couple of issues, one car got nicked and another time i was hit, both times there were no hang ups or issues. Broke the raer windown on the wifes TJ a while back and IAG never batted an eyelid in replacing it at 1200.00 notes.

I emailed them last night asking for clarification on what I was covered for, and informed them of the affiliation with NZFWDA.... here's part of their response....

The issue of off-road use can be a bit of a “grey” area, the policy would cover off-road use only in non club/event usage. Social usage off-road is acceptable but not whilst used in conjunction with NZFWDA events.

I have replied.....

So to go on an organised run, offroad, with a club affiliated with NZFWDA, I would not be insured? Yet i can grab a couple of friends and go bush, and am covered? Often we, as a club that is affiliated with NZFWDA go on "trips" that are not competitive "Events". These "Trips" are probably less hazardous than if a group decided on a whim to go for the tiki-tour on a sunday afternoon.... (confused)

Do you have a number I can call you on?

Cheers.

Mark

The $2K excess for stolen vehicle is a bit steep, you live in a high crime area or something.
I agree AMI are the best for offraod insurance. My vehicle has all the mods and an agreed value of $13K. Not sure exactly how much it is per year as it is included as one price with house and contents. $300 excess for accidents on roads and if stolen/burnt out. $1000 ecxess if damaged offroad. Interestingly enough they consider Worsley's Spur (grade 5) as a raod and a river as a raod as long as its dry. From my discussions with them, they define a road the same as it is defined within the law, have a read as it includes all paperroads (even if they don't currently exist) and rivers. And I have tested this theory out by making a claim, coughed up in full. Was with sun and they refused to insure me after rolling my last 4wd.

see if you can talk directly to the underwriter?, they may not understand the types of trips and comps that clubs run?, they may be confusing NZFWDA trips with national comps etc.

Precisely. Buy the rationale so far, if I were to prang on the way from Cambridge to Hamilton on Saturday, as part of the food drive were doing, I wouldnt be covered, because im doing it as part of a club.

Hopefully I can talk to someone direct soon.

Seems a bit of a waste of time.....

Hi Mark,

I must apologise as I have misinformed you. Please bare with me as I am new to the company and it is only my 2nd day on the job.

I have been informed by my Superior that off roading will not be covered whether it is an organised event or a casual Sunday off road activity with a group of mates. This means where you are off roading as an actual/physical activity you will not be covered. However should you have to go off road on route to a destination (ie a beach) to get to somewhere and something happens then there will be cover.

HHmmmmmm..... so to get to KataiKati (my destination) I choose to go via Thommos...... hhmmmmmm

Based on that I certaintly don't trust that my claim will go through...

I'm with Barley:

$250 excess for Personal Use
$500 excess for Business Use
$250 extra excess for unders 25's
$1000 excess for offroad.

this costs $500 and something a year. I had a nightmare claim with them this year as all my tools were stolen from the back of the truck. Barley put me in touch with the claims person directly and it was sorted within a couple of days.

Cheers,

Bill

Another endorsement for AMI... I recently had two windscreens replaced 2 weeks apart. The first was due to a branch while driving up a riverbed on a Club trip. I was totally honest about how it happened, and they didn't hesitate to approve the claim. Two weeks later I got a stone chip on the main road which was to big to repair. No hassles with claim.

I'll never have anything to do with Tower after the hassles I went through getting a medical insurance claim approved. The policy wording was very clear regarding the cover, but it took 3 months and a referral to the insurance ombudsman before they coughed up. They were absolute bastards!

And I will go the Barley route for the same reasosn when I get my new vehicle. Claims were sorted without any hassle at all.

IF Clubauto is a re-branding of National Auto Club (and I'm not sure if it is) they specialise in insuring anything, but at exhorbitant rates so that they can still make money after processing all the claims from moronic bogan piss-brains in unsafe, badly modded or turboed rice sleds. If they're a different company then their advertising would indicate that they must be working on the same principle, to a greater or lesser degree.

AMI have proved to be consistently the best I've seen lately, in terms of service, good coverage and prompt payouts. Being in car-sales I get to see how a lot of companies deal with people, and have taken my business to AMI.
