Masterton to MartinBorough - River Trip - Sat 19th

Post by mike »

Hi All,

River trip - approx 60kms of river driving. Well setup vehicles only with snorkels, MT's, Recovery gear etc. Entering Bird nesting so awareness is a must.

2 vehicles confirmed so far - would like a max 5.

cheers

The image's on google earth must be taken from different season's, as the river looks really driveable to about the half way point around the gladstone road bridge, then it look's really deep with the water from pretty much bank to bank

Wish i was closer :D :D

Hello mike

I'm keen to give this a go, if you can forward details.

A question for you though, to do this should I have any mods done to the diff breathers for this kinda trip ????

Know my 4yr old is more than keen :D :D

My 5yr old heard about it tonight. He's now coming with me too ;) I didn't think that he would after the last river trip that he did... standing on the seat to avoid the rising water!

As far as the diffs go, you should be ok. Think of it as a test trip... if at the end of the trip you have water in your diff oil then you will know that you should sort something out ;)

I haven't touched the breathers in my Safari and even after drowning it in the river the diff oils were fine. So a Hilux that has been 'tweaked for offroad' should be fine... as long as it has a snorkel? It has a snorkel ay? If so, it would also pay to put a plastic bag over the top of it and check that either the engine stalls or the snorkel starts to collapse from the suction. If you can hear it sucking in air then it's essentially useless.

takes 5 mins to put breathers on. better than replacing $70 worth of oil  just rip the top off the breather off with a pair of pliers and push some plastic tubing over it, run it up iinto the engine bay and through the back drain plugs into your side storage panels. put some $3 super cheap petrol filters on it to stop the bugs and crap going down and your done.

leave caltex rematukakakakakakkkuakaka at 7:30am Sunday morning. Allows plenty of time for the day

The bottom of the air cleaner has a rubber water drain. Check that to make sure there is no gorse or something stuck in it stopping it sealing.

Cheers Richard

Any spare seats available? Can meet at Featherston and leave my car there so no need to drop me anywhere afterwards :) <-- was that groveling enough or should I offer beer at my place the night before which allows a much longer sleep in that the poor Welly guys meeting at 7:30 on the other side of the hill :)?

I've got a couple of spare back seats if you want. I'm going to put my son in the front seat though... it's one of the stipulations that has been put in place after the last river experience ;)

I'll keep an eye on this topic tonight and tomorrow morning to see if you are still keen to go. You too newbie. We'll meet you at the petrol station in Featherston William.
