reversing down nasty long track in low range to recover a surf my transfer case lever jumped into neutral, could have been a whole lot worse!
what would cause this, ?
(not my leg ,already bent lever over)
what is the fix?

Its pretty common, like most old cruisers the gearbox and transfer boxes are pretty worn, just get used to it and hold the lever in place with your hand if you need to..... or buy a new cruiser

common as mud.. mine did it forwards or reverse.. just hold onto it.

Rubber shoe. I'm guessing it is pushed over / stretched and when the t case lever vibrates the stretching rubber tries to go back to normal shape so it pulls it out of gear.
I could be wrong though.

increase the detent pressure withen the g/box linkage, may have to pull apart to access, if you use a bungie then you keep the selector fork rubbing onto the selector slot, which wears both out quite rapidly,

On Al's last West Coast trip, I must of knocked mine out of 4X4 into 2X4 half dozen times, normally stopping me fast.
