Help, my zook is stuck in first gear...

Post by Bazooka »

Went 4x4ing on the weekend and set up camp in my favourite spot beside the river, jumped in my truck the next day to drive out and it was stuck in 1st gear :x :( . It has been a bit sloppy in the gear department for a wile but it was stuck fast. I got stuck in some mud because I could not put it in reverse so had to ring a mate to come get me.

What would cause this and how do I fix it? Is it just a warn shifter bushing or is there something ells?

Its a 87 jimny, just an imported SJ413.

Why would the transfer case bushing have anything to do with the gearbox and/or gear leaver? The transfer box is sweet, changing fine. Its just the gear box, and I have taken the top off the shifter assembly and I can change gear fine with a screwdriver but I don’t want to put it all back together and find it do the same next time I head out. The bushing looks worn but is that what caused the problem?

if the bushing on the bottom of your lever is worn the lever might be hitting the side of the case before it has engaged gear properly .

is the shifter locating bolt broken? This combined with a worn top bush will cause them to jam in gear.

Yes I think you are right, I have done a bit of research in the last day and pretty sure it must be the shifter locating bolt and the bush both worn out or broke. Thanks :)

If you can rotate your gear leaver then the bolt is definately stuffed....

I have new transfer case and gearbox bushings avaliable if you need one, and I did have the locating bolt (but will just have to find it) but there is 2 parts numbers avaliable as the later models used a bigger bolt and I can't remember which one I have.

From my enquires trying to get the bolt a while back the 09135-08006 is $3.40 available Suzuki New Zealand, the 09135-10005 is ex Japan $39.60 (not a misprint)

P.s. I also have a SJ413 diff with lockrite fitted, shipping may be a killer for the whole thing, but for the right offer may pull the head out and just send that...

The shifter handle did not turn around, it felt the same as when I got my transfer box stuck in neutral, the leaver moves in all direction there is just no gear there...

How much to get a shifter bushing and I new locating bolt sent out? I need them by Friday but can deposit the money in your account tomorrow (Monday), PM me some account details.

How much are you looking for for that locker? As I said in my other thread I can get a new one from RR for $280 + fright so I would probably pay $250 for a second hand one installed in a head, I don’t really know what they are worth so let me know if you think its worth a bit more. I have family in Auckland and they are coming down in a month so fright is no problem.

Thanks. :D

Including freight and insurance its USD$311.49 from Rocky Road :) Which is just over $450 NZD taking into account the exchange rate and credit card currency conversion fee's. As its over $400NZD you may or may not get hit with customs and gst (not sure if there is duty payable on a locker??) but gst will be another $56.25 so your looking at over $500 + Fitting etc etc buy the time you actually get it here.

To give you an idea on price I have it on trademe for $500 for the whole diff (but will cost me $25 in success fee's too)...

Have pm'ed you about the bush. If your transfer case has locked up in the past it would be worth replacing that too while you at it as it will happen again...

I order quite a bit of stuff from the states with my hunting and I have a few tricks up my sleave for cutting fright costs by about half plus I have a mechanic for a cousin who is also into his suzuki’s so I think I could get one here and installed for about $325-$350, so I will pass that up, thanks for the offer though.
