hi , well im going to be running a warn m8000 winch with a 680amp battery on my new truck and want to know what sort of alternator would be a good fit. im running a toyota 3y motor so would need a multi v pully. other than that any sugestions would be good, i will be putting the truck threw some harsh conditions like sloppy mud and water, and i presume it will be good to have an alternator with an inbuilt regulator. any help would be cool thanks.

high amp alternator
Re: high amp alternator
You need a second battery if you want it to perform. It isn't the alternator that is the weak point but the batteries. That is the biggest mistake most make about an electric winch. I ran a 7.8 hp 24v winch in winch comps for 3 years (before going to twin motors and a lot of othe rmods) and that was powered by the standard Safari 35amp alternator and never had any problems unless the alternator stopped charging due to mud etc inside it. The key was 2 very large batteries. CCA is pretty much irrelevant but since you want big starting batteries, then lots of CCA is a byproduct of the reserve capacity. So 680CCA is plenty to run the winch in theory but in practice for it to run for any length of time then you will need 2 of then at least but more like 2 800 (or better) batteries. Big NS70's are pretty good option and some of them will have up around 160 to 180 reserve minutes.
Sorry no help with winch alternator as I just used factory 110amp 12v and a old style 70amp 24v on my old truck.

Re: high amp alternator
thanks for the info, i was trying to get away from duel batteries. my truck at the moment runs a 110amp falcon alternator and 680amp marine battery and havent had too much problem so far, but havent used the winch for long periods of time. the most ive done in one go would be 20 meters non stop dragging the diffs in some ruts. well might have to change my battery setup a little. thanks again.
