Check your current ratio first.

(Early?) autos had 4.62 diffs, while the manuals have 5.12s. If you have 4.62s, a set of 5.12s will make a noticable improvement to your low gearing.

To check your ratio:

Lock one axle shaft so it doesn't turn or, if the diff' is still in the truck, jack up the vehicle so that one wheel is still on the ground.

Then rotate the pinion (input) shaft, carefully and accurately counting the number of turns it takes to rotate the free axle shaft (or wheel) exactly one turn.

The number of turns of the pinion shaft will be exactly half of your diff' reduction ratio.

i.e, 2.31 turns of the pinion for one axle rotation means you have a 4.62:1 diff'. 2.56 turns means you have a 5.12:1 diff'

Four thousand, three hundred and twenty seven turns and still counting means you're looking at the wrong wheel!
