Safari Diff ratios

Post by Landrover1953 »

Hi All, I know this has been done to death, but, is there a easy (and cheap) way to fix my final drive ratio? I have a 1990 Y60 LWB, auto, truck is now fitted with a factory safari turbo, inc fuel pump. The I fitted the 35's. I have been told it has either 3.9 or 4.1 diff ratios. I think I need 4.6's or 4.88's.
Where can I get these form? does any one have a pair of 4.88's form a 2.8 for sale?
Do Terrano diffs fit? front & back? which model, some have 31 spline some have 33, What are in the safari, 31 or 33?
I know this must have been done before?

Help please

Have you checked the trans axle id under the bonnet like in the other thread? If so it will most likely say HG41 so you have 4.1 diffs.
2.8 deisels and 3.0 petrol Safaris have 4.625 diffs. Some Terrano's have 4.88 but mlost are 4.3 or 4.6 and a Nissan Van (Uravan I think) has 5.29's)
Safari fron axles are 31 spline, safari rear are 33. Terrano rear are 31 up until somewhere in the 90's where they change to 33.
I believe the Terrano R&P will fit front and rear on a Safari but a small amount of machining is needed to fit them into the rear. Nothing major but not a bolt in job.

Fitting 4.6's with 35's will mean the speedo will be reading the same as 4.1's and 31's.

If your's is factory TD42 then it does not have 3.9's as only petrol auto's had those.

Why do you you so desparately need lower diff ratios? I have always run mine on 4.1's and I run 35x11.5 Simex (ie 35.5" tall) and don't have a problem. If it is for engine breaking then diff ratios won't help. and besides engine breaking down hill is for people who haven't learnt to drive off road yet. There are driving techniques that offer far more control but take a fair bit of practice.

Mate I ran mine on 35's with a TD42 before I turboed it!
