As some of you are aware I have managed to blow apart the gearing on two GEW10,000lb winches now (see thread). Supplier is offering to swap it for an EWX 12,000 for an extar $200. (questions asked here as difference in price is only $151). Is anyone out there using this type of winch who can offer me some feedback about them? It is on SWB safari on 35" tyres with all the usual mods.

Re: Feedback needed EWX 12,000lb winch
I am using one on my son's YN60 surf. It has performed faultlessly and yet to perform a double line pull. I realise there is a difference in weight between a Surf and a Safari.
It has been used to recover 80 series in the past with no problem. It is not the fasted winch around with from memory 256:1 reduction, but it isn't being used in a competition situation so it suits our requirement. We are still running a steel cable. I am about to swap over to synthetic when I get the time to change the fair lead. Out of all the electrical models Runva produce, my opinion is that it would be the best suited to a Safari.

Re: Feedback needed EWX 12,000lb winch
Been running one on my surf for a couple of years now. First pull was pulling out a very bellied lwb safari on 31ats where i had only just made it through on my 35s.
Did the waikato easter trip to thompsons, waitapheta and it didn't miss a beat the whole time.
Only thing that has gone wrong with it was the little switch on the side of the control box. Not the fastest winch but reliable IMO

Had the same winch on Thunderguts. Worked well on that heavy monster of a truck.
I had winch drama on the Waitapheta trip, but like 99% of winch drama, it wasn't related to the actual winch, it was something else in the wiring. (VSR played up and stopped charging the winch battery and killed the winch battery.)
Its a shame your truck is 24V, I have a pretty much brand new Warn 8274 sitting in my shed looking for a good home

Re: Feedback needed EWX 12,000lb winch
Hi Al
If I was you I would spend the money and get a Warn 10000-12000.
You have seen how my 9500Ti has performed pulling Safari's without any trouble in the Chasm.
Before that my 9000 Warn was used 200-300 times in extreme situations and is still going strong
I think Speed and reliability of a winch are big things on the track.
Cheers Richard

Never say die, up man and try
Re: Feedback needed EWX 12,000lb winch
Just try it Al.
You obviously don't want to part with $1500-$2000 for one of the so called "big brand" winches, so give it a crack. These winches are cheaper because of their place of origin, not because they are vastly inferior. If I had a dollar for every time I have seen a Warn shit itself, I'd be able to buy a dozen 'lecy winches
Just remember that if you want any electric to be reliable, you have to have very good wiring, battery and keep it out of the shit (as much as possible any way), and if that means not hanging it on the front, then don't.

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
Re: Feedback needed EWX 12,000lb winch
Thanks for feedback guys. Rok: the winch is well protected from shit by the design of my front bar. The electrics are all under the bonnet behind the headlight. Batteries are all new and good, wiring is fine.
I think I will go for this but still keep an eye out for a PTO, my mate has one on his wife's truck, never used so am trying to talk him into it. I can always sell this one on when the PTO is setup. Just need to come to an agreement about the $$$difference.
