winch accessories

Okay so what are the basic winch accessories I need?

Got the winch with wire fitted (came with new toy).

Figure on a tree trunk protector, winch extension strap, dampner, pulley, some shackles and gloves.

Anything else I should think about?

I've got what coxsys got and can raise it by a 3rd tree trunk protector, 20m extension and a few other bits

sounds overkill but you can never have enough recovery gear

I carry four snatch blocks so I can winch myself backwards if I have to. Never needed to yet, but you never know.
I also carry a few 4-5 metre lengths of rated chain with hooks on both ends.

what sort of shackles should i get? looked on 4wd bits and cant really see the difference between the yellow pin and green pin. And should I just get the one with the highest rating?

greep pin are made in italy, yellow pin are made in china. green pin have 6 to 1 safety rating and yellow 3 to 1 I think. China has a habit of using crap steel. I'd go green pin for sure. ORE will have these on the site this week through the wtbs vendor. support the site by supporting the vendors

No, you can do it with 4.

1 in front of the vehicle
1 out to the side
1 at an anchor point behind the vehicle
1 at the rear of the vehicle and put the hook at the same point as the 3rd pully.

It is hard on the winch and rope.

Here is a pic showing not only my outstanding graphics skills but how it is achieved. As NJV6 says it is hard on gear; but I imagine it would only be used when all else has failed. I have tried it on flat ground as a demonstration and it does work. I carry a steel winch cable on a garden hose spool and a Keto (sp) clip to extend my winch cable as the usual 30-35 metre cable length would not achieve this.

It is not so much the weight (LWB patrols are no light weight anyway), More the space it consumes. I barely have room for my lunch box , especially by the time I add spares like axles, CV's, steering rods etc.

I have found that a cable winch like a tirfor style is a good addition, if main winch fails or need to winch backwards or side ways you can. is an arm strong method and hard work, helps to have passengers to help.

I carry two ammo tins with two 4.5T shackles, 1x pulley block, 1x tree protector in each of them. Also have two shackles fitted to rear of truck. 30 mtr winch extension strap. heavy duty tirfor (used by Oz army to pull out unimogs) with 30 mtrs of wire rope. snig chain with hooks both ends. And that's just for winching, don't even ask about ropes, maxtrac, digging tools etc, tec.
At times it can all be in use.

Guess you are lucky it isnt a rover or there would be even more spares. Mind you halve the spares are required because of the overloading from the copius spares needed for "reliability".

I had to winch myself sideways after getting stuck between two trees and snapping my chainsaw chain. I used one snatch block out front and a tree out the side. I have some sleeves on my synthetic rope to stop it getting damaged on rocks etc so used the sleeve to stop damage to the tree. It was getting dark and raining... not fun.

Why do we fit winches to the front?

If we get stuck moving forwards wouldnt it be better to fit them to the rear to pull us out in the direction we know is driveable?

We fit them to the front as that is the way we are going!

The biggest winch accessory you can have is to travel with another vehicle and have a ground anchor!!

I've heard that is a good way to bend your chassis. You can brace your truck on a tree (if possible) but you might as well just use the tree instead of farting around if there is one handy.

A tree or an anchor is what I figure. No damage to anyone else means I am not shelling out cash for something that couldve been avoided. Of course if the inevitable happens then it stands to reason that any damage bill is footed by the one being recovered as it wouldnt have happened if they didnt get stuck in the first place (of course this is up for negotiation if the recoverer was negligent ).
