Andrews 80 Series Cruiser tidy up

Post by Andrew1706 »

Might as well chuck something up here as I've got more then enough time :D

Here's what she started out like:

Image

Stock standard HDJ80 GX, manual, LSD rear, 380,000kms with an engine rebuild at 330kms

She's served me very well doing numerous trips up the beach during which time it was mounted by a Safari resulting in new rear doors, various other dents and scratches and spotlight combos.

Image

After this photo I fitted 2" coil spacers to clear the 35s - they rubbed quite badly and are quite chewed out but only have about 20% tread left so no worries.

Image

The 35s and my driving style coupled with the high kms resulted in a few bent arms - so they were replaced with genuine items.

Image

It all came to an end one night when I managed to strip a CV and flange spline in one attempt

Image

Image

So the whole diff came out for a rebuild, swivel housing, wheel bearings, brake discs, pads, calipers, cvs and flanges. The only thing I'm not touching is the diffhead and axles as I'll rebuild them when/if I ever get an air locker.

It's a fat truck with an open front diff and non working LSD and I got sick of not being able to attempt the stuff I want to because I knew the truck would fail.

So bought an EWX12000 winch:

Image

But haven't been able to try it out as the truck sorta fell apart before I had the chance.

And I've had this badboy lying around for a while so my mission is to get it plumbed up.

Image

Image

In order to fit it in there I had to ditched the factory AC radiator which didn't even work, besides I've got working windows so don't need AC.

But while playing around with the pipes on the compressor (don't worry, there was no gas) I figured I might as well convert it into onboard air.

Image

The pulley spins free which confused me but remember that it clicks in so spun the other part of the pulley and felt pressure on the left hand port. I just need to replace the idler pulley bearing which seized in a very smokey fashion.

Anyway after that discovery I was very happy and decided to treat myself to some beers.

Haha, I popped over a dune and saw reeds at the bottom and thought why not this truck weighs 3 tonnes I can smash my way through anything but if was full of water and bellied straight away.

He thought I had gone through and followed me but I was just sitting over the other side hence the blue doors

Haven't got any work done recently because I've got a flu but I'm waiting for a pipe flaring tool to turn up because I have to replace a brakeline.

Well my camera is playing up but managed to get some photos and now my laptop is playing up so can't upload them

Got some manual locking hubs today and dropped the diffhead back into the housing, new brakeline made up because the previous one was crushed after winching my steering arms straight one night

Still trying to source some CVs and axles at a good price, found a listing on ebay AU for 2 cvs and axles for AU$240 but they wont ship overseas!

Sent of numerous emails and no one is replying to me

While I'm sure they will put out good light once coupled with HIDs, I hate them cosmetically

I intend to go grab some semi sealed lamps so I can chuck some HIDs in 2 of the 4 lamps I have now and upgrade my wiring.

I'd be keen to see some pics of how you plumbed up your intercooler. I want one of those water/air ones from 4x4bits but my god aren't they pricey!

At this point in time I can't afford to set it up but was thinking of buying just the inlet part which bolts to the inlet manifold from 4wdbits but they are wanting 250 for it.

As for piping, alloy would be preferable but expensive and time consuming, I did spy some radiator tubing on trademe ages ago that was the right diameter and in long lengths but not sure about the heat properties?

Well I got 100mm longer brakelines made up from Enzed cost me $80 all up.

Threw it all back together one day last week and took it up the beach for a spin overnight.

On the way back not even 2 minutes from home heard a ting ting ting and felt the wheel wobble:

Image

Image

I had this problem on the other hub but that got down to 2 studs limping home and replaced with some studs that I had made for free cheers my old machining job.

Should have done the other side but didn't even think about it, I think the rest of the studs are at my last job so I'll grab them then redo that hub.

Really don't know, not done up tight enough, done up too tight, wrong type of wheel nuts, old weak studs.

I read on lcool.org that apparently the 80 series had weak studs from factory that stretch quite easily.

I've also head that Mangels need to be tightened up pretty square or else they relax after a while causing the nuts to loosen.

Might just be the luck of the draw.

Last I drove this truck it was a struggle on the road - combination of no steering damper and close to 3" lift. Now that I've put another 2" spring lift in bringing it up to 4" overall in the front I finally put a little bit of effort into modifying my drop boxes:

Image

Image

They were built on an auto which has a different cross member to my manual 80 - the manual sits about 70mm closer then the auto does.

is the chassis mount (bolt holes etc) the same? just the cross member moved or is it completly different?

The whole crossmember is moved forward and theres a few holes that I can see in the chassis rail - the two inner bolts are just a bracket welded on the inside of the rail.

You can see in the first picture where they are supposed to bolt too and then in my second one how much I have to move them.

Image

All that rolling around on the ground and wrestling the diff into place pooped me last night  Too fat.
