Wellington South Coast Clean Up

Post by skid »

This would mainly be for the Wellington Crew, but the invitation is open to all.

I have been in talks for some time with a Forest & Bird reperesentative over a proposed beach clean up on the south coast of wellington.

As it has turned out, it seems that for the last 10 years, Barry Insull from CCVC has been valiantly campaigning this exact event, so the decision has been made to join in with them as they have extended the invite out to hopefully get more vehicles.

Here is a copy of the document that I have recieved from Barry.....

South Coast Clean Up - Saturday 14 November 2009

Like a squeaky wheel I write yet again to inform you of this year’s Cross Country Vehicle Club (4WD club) South Coast Clean Up. I say yet again as this will be the 10th year I have written on behalf of the club inviting the participation of councilors and others.

Over the years club membership has been extremely appreciative of the effort many of you have put in to join with us.

The format for this year will generally follow that now well established.

9.30 Gather at the South Coast Information Centre (former Owhiro Bay Quarry site)

10.00 Depart on short “off road” excursion (weather permitting). Trip uses some of the tracking network in the Te Kopahau Reserve and the private property of Long Gully.

11.00 2-2.5 hours to pick up rubbish

1.00 BBQ at Red Rocks.

Many thanks to Council’s City Ops team for their continuing support along with both the Watson family and last but not least the Parks and Garden crew.

Reflecting back, articles recovered have covered the whole spectrum, plastics by the mile, car tyres, a porcelain hand basin, household rubbish, computers, farm fencing, car bodys, gearbox’s, old motors and even an extremely old electric welder. While a significant quantity of rubbish was removed in each of the early clean ups it is pleasing to see that this now trends toward just 5 or 6 cubic meters.

To complement this year’s clean up a number of primary school kids from the Strathmore area will look after the first 2-3 km under the guidance of Councilor Goulden, then join in for the BBQ. There is even a group from “Blue Wellington”(a section of the Wellington Branch of Forest & Bird) who may join us this year.

If you would like to participate please either send me an email (bipest@xtra.co.nz), contact me at home 234 7757 or alternatively during the day on 027 2404530. Should the weather be such that cancellation is warranted notification will be via the News Talk ZB cancellation service.

In the unlikely event of cancellation, Saturday 21/11/09 has been scheduled as the “rain off” day

As an aside the 4WD club assisted with or ran clean ups on the Eastborne coast, Foxton beach and Waitarere beach just a few weeks back. Our activities in this field support the contribution given by so many under the banner of Keep NZ Beautiful (though I must say we have been going significantly longer than the current campaign).

Barry Insull
Coordinator

Between myself and Barry, we have decided that if you could turn up with a few spare seats then this would be ideal as you would be able to take other volunteers from other organisations with you and show them a bit of hospitality and a wee bit of 4wding as well as assisting with the beach clean up.

there is a small 4wd venture planned for the start as a way of getting to Cave Bay before returning to somewhere between the old Quarry and Devils Gate, this is dependent on weather as it has some steep sections involved.

Barry as asked that you have good tyres, preferably muds for the trip and some prior knowledge of 4wding as well.

It would be good to get out there and be seen to be doing community work.

please advise if you are planning on attending

Unfortunately this falls on the second round of the National Trials, so I wont be attending, but that should only mean that more of you can go coz you wont have to put up with me or pull me out of water

cheers

Hi Skid,
I could certainly be in for this, haven't been around the South Coast for quite a while - and helping clean up at the same time too.

I will keep an eye out on this thread to see how it develops
