Da colour

Was told recently about this, apparantly around 93 model had black top , stronger crank I think. However my 97y60 TD42 has blacktop motor too. Just what I heard , but sure some gurus will fill the gaps.

No TD42 has Ali head!
I've had a few silver TD42's and they are all NA. (and all pre 93) They were all cast iron head and 4200 redline.
There were no TD42T untill 94. Any before that were aftermarket turbo's.
I also have a 96 TD42T black top and that also has the same 4200 redline and cast iron head.

I have run an 89 TD42 with 21psi and increased the redline to 6000 and it handles it fine. I know of one that is running to 7500 rpm but that doesn't last long. The 35psi could have something to do with it though.

There are more differences between TD42 and TD42T than anything I've ever heard about black vs silver. (That is unless black is TD42T which from what I've seen that could be the case)
TD42T has a difference cam that has more lift and duration but it runs 16:1 compression. It also has a better crank and oil squirters (on to the botton of the piston)
TD42 runs 22.5:1 compression
Pre 93 have a heavier piston and handles high boost better.

So from my observations, black top is TD42T and silver is TD42 (factory NA) that would also make black top 94 onwatds only as well.
I could be wrong as that is just an observation from having my head under a few GQ bonnets. (and owning both silver and black tops at the same time)

Maybe someone can shed some light for me
My 97 y60 has blacktop
It is imported from japan, safari poverty pack.
No electric windows, no rev counter but space in dash for one, no
oil press guage or volt meter.
Also two batteries but 12 volt, was told all safari 24.
Fairly knowledable mech has said it is same as basic patrol spec. Oh oil filter mountings same size.
No side lights on front guards too.
cheers

TD42T has 22.5:1 compression. no different from TD42.
not sure where you got 16:1 from. i doubt an IDI motor will even start on that compression.

My 96 is factory twin battery and 12v. Seems all the later model ones were 12v.

And you learn something new everyday. I just checked the TD42T specs and it has a higher compression ratio than TD42. ie 22.8:1. The 16:1 ratio is something that I've heard so much I never questioned it!

the only nissan diesel i know of hand that has anything close to 16:1 compression is the YD25. 15:1 (i think), direct injected common rail. the ZD30 in the patrol is 18:1 direct injected and higher injection pressure than TD42.

(edit:spelling)

Ok thanks guys so there really isnt much between them.

I just purchased a 1994 Patrol LWB and it has the black top motor in it and I thought it could be because it was 12volt.

I'm wanting to turbo this one so would there be anything I need to do (internaly) to the motor?

I would not put a turbo on a post 93 (black top) motor. They do not have the extra oilers and they are weaker in the crank. You are asking for trouble.

If I were you, I would sell your motor, buy a pre 93, bolt a turbo onto that and put that in your truck.

My thoughts, anyway.

Go for it just keep the boost at a lowish level eg 16psi or below. Also keep pyro temps down below 500*c.

Cool thanks for your help everyone.

If I was to run a trubo I would only be running about 12psi just to help out on the hills.

I didnt know they older engines were better suited for turbo conversions. I may also do a engine swap later in the future but cant afford at the moment.
