difficulty changing gear

Post by wagonsnz »

hi guys

I drive a manual 2.4 TD surf, and am having trouble changing into 2nd gear, either from first or down from third. It generally only is difficult when cold, after the engine warms up a bit it doesnt seem to be a problem. I dont want to force it, so I usually release the clutch and try again, but this is obviously a bit of a pain and I'm worried it could be a major gearbox problem? The other gears seem to be ok. I have checked the transmission oil level which is fine. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated..

Cheers

Could be the grade of oil in it, I've had Penzoil recommended in the Toyota boxes as the slightly thicker and is better for it. One of the features of this is that its haarder to change gear when cold......so it could be fine.

If you don't know when it was changed last may be worth changing it

the oil in the Gbox is to thick when cold which makes it hard to change gear due to synchros not spooling propperly so...

drop the oil out of the box and replace it with some nice new stuff of the correct viscosity

or get your hands on some castrol VMX-M and that will sort it out for you
