Auto giving whiplash!!

Howdy,
My mum has a 95 mistral td27 auto.
When you take off it likes to hold in 1st gear till it hits 4k or above rpm then slams into second giving everyone whiplash & a very uncomfortable ride.
Any suggestions to what is wrong?????

Mums v3000 did this many years back. wonder what it is.

check around the shift lever or console for a button that has HOLD on it and that may solve your problem? makes the trans hold the gear to redline or some shit like that

my commodore used to do this, I was told to slacken off the kickdown cable a bit. that worked.

I checked that about a month ago.
My old Terrano used to do it to but i sold it b4 i went & checked what was up.

my old mistral used to do the same.

there is a switch (on the dash if i remember right) that says something like 'power & econ'. put it in economy mode and mine was loads better.

Have you checked ATF fluid? Right level or may need changing

I would recommend same as above. I also learnt when to button off because if you keep your foot down it will just keep revving but if you button off if will change up and actually accelerate faster, go figure

My '97 Mistral had the same whiplash problem when it kept dropping out of overdrive on the open road. Changing the ATF fluid and filter fixed it.

My Terrano does that when in power mode even worse when it's cold too(the rany that is...not the weather)

get the same prob with my parents mistral, it gets to like 3rd then stays at that for about 2-3ks at like 3300RPM, buttoning off works accasionally but generrally u just gotta wait.... I'd have to say td27 auto boxxes are just bad...

Take it to a auto transmission place and get a service sounds like most of those "fixes" are just ways to mask the problem. At least give one a ring a see what they think. trans in my commy wasn't quite going as it should have and had burnt the fluid cos of towing, I changed the fluid then got a trans cooler put on and it went a bit better. Ended up taking it to a trans place to get them to give it a service (fluid change and filter and adjust some stuff apperently) bugger if i know what they adjusted but it went much better after that.

My wife's does this only when she drives it Have taught her to start off in low 2nd and then chage to drive, and she reackons I have a heavy foot.

I'm guessing that the TPS is a cause. The Nissan TPS's are one of the first sensors to pack up and as the auto is completely electronic it relies heavily on the TPS to sense load.
Is there a light on the dash that flashes on start up?

Nope, after its nicely warmed up all you have to do is button off abit and it works fine..

Diconect the temp sensor in the auto and that will solve the problem. You will need to fit a resistor in place of the sensor. I did this to mine many years ago and worked well, but you then need to drive accordingly when cold.
