Who has a 96 auto LandCruiser?
I'm after information about the auto unit on my 96 auto unit. It's not doing the right thing!!
Cheers.

"What's it doing?"
The problem is in low ratio - I was expecting it to change up smoothly just as it does in high.
In reality, I have to rev the engine over 3000rpm to get it to shift - then it does with big lurch. I'd hate to be on a slippery slope when this happens.
I've tried a '94 and it's nothing like this - nice and smooth through the gears as I'd expect.
Any ideas???? I'm really stumped. The local Toyota garage doesn't seem to know anything!!
Cheers

Hows it goin.
Been talking about this lots lately. I have the A440 auto and it doesn't have this problem cause its all cable operated and not too much electrics.
One suggestion I heard was to remove one of the plugs on the side of the trans. This is the one that tells the transfer case to lock when you pull the lever into low box. If you remove this plug you will have to pull the lever into low box and hit the 4WD button before the centre diff lock will engage. Makes it more usable if you ask me.
And presto the auto will shift like normal. Give it a go and get back to me.
Cheers

RE: Auto Unit US?
Thanks for the quick reply.
I've had a quick look underneath in the car park. There are quite a few plugs under there. I much prefer something I can see working!
I'll have to find out what the auto unit is but mine doesnt' have a 4WD button. Just put it into low range and it locks the centre diff and disables the ABS. I much prefer cables that I can see working!!
To me, it feels as though the unit doesn't know that it's in low. it seems to change at about the speeds that it would in high (except twice the revs!)
Really frustrating - was driving in the snow yesterday and didn't want to put it into low because of the revs and the visious!!
Cheers J

When you say "Landcruiser" do you mean an 80 series, 70 series or Prado (90 series).
If you are talking about a prado, then I have a simalr deal, but there is a button on 90 series Prados to let them start off in 2nd gear on the transmission console.

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
My Prado does it, Its all to do with the fact that you do'nt have any( back loading or energy sapping work), the box is synchonised for road gearing work. Multply all this by a low range gearing and the box thinks its got no work to do.The Auto has to be synchronized with: Drive shaft revs,Vacumn,Kick Down, etc. Hope this helps

Still with problems
The vehicle is an 80 series Landcruiser. It does have button to start it off in second.
I've tried it on a steep track with a load of people on it but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
When I tried the 94 - 80 series cruiser in low range it changed nice and smoothly.
Still haven't looked to see which box I've got.
Still fed up with this, I'm sure it isn't right but the Toyota guys still don't know!
Hmmmmmmmm

Auto changing in low
Certainly is quite a hit when it changes gear!

It doesn't sound as tho it's doing what it should by anymeans and looks like there is others around the countryside doing similar ?
The dealerships - "quote" have factory trained and professional technicians - so they can charge you a hefty hourly rate ! So they should be able to fix it

Try a better dealer with some people in it that know what they're doing.
Have you tryed another identical cruiser, doing the same identical road test? this test MUST BE 100% the same test.
As i said before mine Prado does it, The lower the gear the greater the jerk. I had a 12HT with a A44 Auto , tryed all the test, came up with the same answer.
The lower the gear,( the less the motor needs to work), so the greater the jerk.

I tried the two Toyota garages around here. Their answer was to pass the problem onto the other garage. One tried thier 80 series '96 cruiser but had the same result. Theirs did it so it must be right. I explained the dangers about this type of change when off road - they just shrugged thier shoulders and walked away. Great!
I've tried to do the same sort of test on two identicle vehicles, both with the same result. This can't be right!!! I'm starting to doubt my own sanity!!
Yes, the lower the gear the greater the jerk (not the driver!!)
Does yours still do this? Did you manage to 'cure' the problem?
It still seems as though the auto unit doesn't know it's in low range and therefore changes up at the same speeds.

My answer to this problem is, stay in a gear that is appropiate to the type of terrain , most of the time you dont need to be in low range because theres enough power in high for most up hill climbs, & select low for down hills. Hope this helps, I just altered my driving habits.

Still with problems
I'm coming to the conclusion that that's probably what I'll have to do.
This seems to be wrong to me for a vehicle of this type. There must be a reason - I just don't know what it is.
I'd like to know what it is though.
Any ideas if the transmissions computer can be fooled to get around with this. I've heard of other people 'reprogramming' their computer for 'customised' uses.
Cheers

my old mans 2003 prado does the same thing.... if you drive smoothly you can make the jult less however if you are in a stuation when you would need low range then it doesnt really seem to be a problem.... if its slippery enough then you will hardly notice it as the wheels will just spin a little. too me it seems good as it holdes the gears more like a manual so you have the revs up and power when you need it without it having to change down a gear, you can also use the low 2nd and 3rd gears on the box in his truck to sellect the gear you want which is good. 4wding has the odd bump here and there if your in a situation where this is a problem you probably dont need low range.
