vitara lacking power with foot to the floor

Post by zook »

have been having problems with my G16A, when i put my foot to the floor it looses all power until i back my foot off a bit. at first i thought it was the main jet so i blew that out took it for a spin and still doing it, next i drained the bowl which did seem to have a fair bit of shit in it. then did the fuel filter, but its still doing it. ive also tryed blowing air back to tank which it does, and blowing air up vapour line. seems to have fuel pressure but not sure how much. have also backed off fuel cap thought it maybe creating a vacumn still nothing.
any help or ideas would be great. thinking of mybe having to start replacing some bits to find out what it is, mite start with a fuel pump. HELP PLEASE

Hey mate,

From past experience take a look at ur distributor, sometimes the weights inside seize and when u put ur foot down the timing doesnt advance hence causing the gutlessness of it.

Only a suggestion, it happened on my engine.

I vote for timing fault. Either belt has slipped or the dizzy has moved.

Idles okay (just) and then when spark is advanced with throttle it goes to crap?

Of course I could be talking through a hole in my head but get a timing light (check spark timing) and whip the front engine cover off check top dead centre is lining up.

If it is the carb the red neck way of clearing the jets is to remove all the top stuff from the carb, get a flat piece of wood (not steel) or hard plastic (like chopping board). Basically something clean and strong that wont splinter. Check it will cover the carb throat completely. Rev the engine up and then quickly cover the throat with the board. this induces a huge vacuum in the carb which should suck any crap out of the jetways. Dont get your clothing etc in the carb and DONT USE YOUR HAND! May have to do it a couple of times, just get it reving abit and then block it off until it just about stalls then remove and repeat.

Of course this may not help either but it is simple.
