WHat is it worth?

Post by Rory »

I am in the process of attempting to emigrate to NZ from UK if you'll let me in, and want to bring my 1990 Landrover 110 with me.

It may not be worth the cost, so I was wondering what anyone would offer me for it if it were in NZ so as I can get an idea of value before I spend the cash on shipping.

Vehicle is a long wheel base (110) ex-military with full canvas roof and military spec roll bar. Engine is V8 with gas-flowed heads, and she is converted to run on LPG. mileage is 250 000 km, the chassis is clean and rust free, as is the rest, apart from some cosmetic rust on the doors.

Standard tyres are swopped for 235/85 on white modular steel wheels.

Any hypothetical offers (realistic) would be appreciated,

Cheers,
Rory

Hi Rory
The NZ army just had a sale in the South Island last month and sold a whole lot of its old V8 110 L/rovers, so probably not the best time to import one ? the rough clapped out ones went for $500 and the best ones made as much as $5000 top dollar I think. Someone from the SI might be able to confirm that.

A defender 90 or similar SWB coil sprung Landy would be the choice to bring in cause they sell well and seem to fetch the best price (Sometimes well more than their worth I wonder :? and there isn't heaps of them here already)

The army were selling off 109" S3 Stage Ones (ie Leaf sprung - not coils like your 110). You won't find any 110 soft tops here unless they've been imported or converted. A similarly aged 110 County Station Wagon was on Trade Me (our eBay) recently & the asking price was ~$10,000 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=58979966 It didn't sell tho.

Hope this helps

Wouldn't raise that with immigrationImage, they might request a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation Image.

Arr that makes snese Furgus, my mistake

My personal choice to bring in would still be a 90. Forward specs had a range of their import Landys at the fieldays and the 90's carried fairly hefty prices.

I looked at it last year and worked out it would be cheaper to buy a 90 in the UK and ship it over, than get one here... also I could get one that had only done the school run on tarmac all its live, with a Full Land Rover Service History...

Thanks everyone, I had a feeling that it would be a rare beast to find. It was hard enough to find in the UK. I suppose I could always just ship a canvas and sticks and convert a 110 van when I got there.

I realise a late model 90 that has only done supermarket carpark duty would be a better money maker, but then unless you own it for 12 months first and two years afterwards then you get stung for GST.

It seems a psychiatric evaluation is the one thing I don't need. Every other area of my life is coming under examination before I am awarded a visa, but then that is one of the reasons I want to get in.

What is LPG availability like over there?
Would I really be better off with a 300 TDI and running on chip fat? It is becoming big business over here.

corr lummey ekk

i thought we had it bad
diesel is about nz$1.20 and petrol about nz$1.80 per litre

lpg is here not as easily available as petrol and diesel but it is easy enough to get ahold of just had a thought not sure what issues you would have with an alternative fuel certificate for the LPG you may have to get it certified when you bring it in as well

LPG is generally a 'selected stations only' fuel... but there are plenty about, and you get to know which ones local to you have it anyway. ITs about 1/2 the price of petrol, so is a good option.

You might want to check what rigours the vehicle will have to go through when you get it here if its got LPG fitted, as I believe any old Tom Dick or Harry can install it over there, whereas here the finishing (Fuel lines and signoff) MUST be installed by someone qualified in LPG fitting... so the truck may need to have a bit of work done before an LPG warrant of fitness is issued

As for the 110, there aren't heaps of them here, but there is plenty to go round since most people see the light and get rid of them in favour of smaller lighter more reliable and economical Japper 4WDs  ...and they will probably cost less than the cost of importing your one from the UK, so pack up the good bits out of it and fit them to one over here... thats my advice on it anyway.

Good luck with the emmigration... Where are you headed when you get here? Rangiora, near Christchurch in the South Island is reportedly 20% populated by Poms now... So unless you're coming over as part of the invasion fleet anywhere else would be a good idea :)

Cheers,

LPG situation is similar over here.

It is the insurance co. that demand installation tickets, but, no insurance = no road tax. No road tax = NZ$3000 fine or your vehicle crushed.

Is it a seperate warant for dual fuel vehicles in NZ?

I hear London is 20 % populated by Kiwis too.
Not intending to be part of an invasion fleet, so anywhere apart from Rangiora. Problem is you got the most amazing country in the world and then let the secret get out. Quite fancy the south or Wellington eventually but will need to go where the work is because you have the good sense not to let people in unless they have a job first..

The network of backstreet garages and pattern parts manufacturers keeps the Land-Rover on top for recreation offroading here, that and the cost of Japanese parts.

Here's a copy of an email from another forum - may be of some use to you Rory

Just in case there are some silent 'foreigners' in this group wondering if
they should bring their treasured Land Rover with them to NZ:

Andy White, an Auckland Land Rover Club import himself, brought his 110 in
from UK recently.
He's put together some notes on what happened and how it was done.
See his story at http://www.lroca.org.nz under "import"

If anyone wants to chat to him I can pass his e-mail on - send me a private
note if need be.

Thanks Andy!

LPG

Post by Goose »

Hi Rory, I've been driving LPG vehicles for a while now, you would have no problem getting LPG unless you are waaaaay out in the sticks, even then you're dual fuel, no?
As for the legal side, in nz you need an "LPG warrent of fitness" every 12 months, but thats a joke, they have a quick look, shake a few wires.... (this is on top of your "vehicle W.O.F" every 6 mths)

As for certification, the tanks need to be certified every 10 years, which is a removal of the tank, usually costs about $300-400 NZD. I imagine they may want you to do this when you get it here. But if it's a common brand system like here, eg lavato, impco, I cant see any problems.

LPG is cheap here, at the moment I pay 87cents (nzd) per litre, winter price, it usually drops back in summer to around 78... something to do with having to import LPG during winter....

My current LPG car is a factory fitted dedicated Ford Falcon, (not dual, LPG only, aussie made, high compression motor etc) and I just drove from Christchurch to Tauranga (1.5hrs south of Auckland), and although it was under 2 tanks of fuel, I kept an eye out for LPG stations, saw heaps :D

Hope this helps, hope you get in, oh, and if you're wondering, Christchurch IS the best place to live. Well, our rugby team is the best...

hi rory i emigrated here 6 months ago from norhamptonshire uk, not to be negative but really do your research before you decide to bring your truck, it can turn out to be a nightmare and you will pay "LANDROVER PRICES" not paddocks or craddocks prices, just remember there are only 4 million people here and alot of them work overseas, in the uk there are 4 million landrover enthusists hence all the landrover shows so prices and patern parts are cheap and available. i am a real landy fan and i dont own one here as i couldnt afford breakages, you best going with the flow over here as jap bits are readily available second hand. and believe me what i have seen the trucks are just as capable as any landy.
