TD42 Turbo Kits

What is the recommended, in peoples opinions, best turbo kit for a GQ? I'm not after all out power but low down torque is more important. Bushed or roller bearing turbo? Keep in mind I'm after a complete bolt on kit, AXT, Denco etc.

Hi From my own personal experence i have had ball bearing turbos and ones with ceramic wheels ,Had nothing but grief with them had the ceramic wheel fall of on 2 turbos ball bearing turbos sieze up would never use them again ,My latest turbo was custum built up here in Auck and worked out cheaper than an off the shelf one and i got the exact performance i was looking for If you want the guys name let me know and ill PM you ..Steve

They make up a J-Pipe style manifold like I have on mine for the exhast side,not a cast style one,nothing wrong with them but some people dont like them.

I would up grade to a BB turbo if you have that option.

Safangari had an ATX kit on his shorty before he onsold and left.

It was plainly unbelievable what the thing could do off the line.

yeah i did ask about ATX, but these guys reckoned that DTS was better and they do more of those kits, but similar power out put at the end anyhow

Right, i got my kit installed over the last few days. its the dts kit from the above pamphlet.

This is what came out of the dyno report

Run up on dyno 54kw @100km (10% down on power)
Fit turbo kit. Fit exhaust, Fit boost controller & boost gauge.
Rerun on dyno & tune 85Kw @ 100km 58% Increase.

its running 12psi

Its an absolute dream to drive now, they told me i should be looking at doing the tappets and injectors sometime, get a bit more out of her, which will be nice.

Fitting a new clutch tomorrow as the standard couldnt handle the new power, heres and example.
Driving it home from Tauranga to Gisborne today, 5th gear up a hill revs start picking up, speed doesn't though so doing some big slippage there.

But it is true what they do say, its almost like driving a different truck. might get a few pics up if it ever stops raining.

hehe almost as much as i paid for my safari, it was about 5k. i could have done the kit myself but couldnt be bothered i was on holiday!! wanted some time off the tools since im already on them 6 days a week looking after a saw mill!!

I also have just installed a DTS kit from Tauranga Diesel. I installed it myself and found it a high quality kit that was very easy to install, only needing the slight moving of some aircon pipes. I also got the 3" exhaust which are actually for the LWB trucks and so required some modifications like shortening the center section and flogging the hangers of the original muffler but was generally pretty easy. The turbo has transformed the truck to drive and power comes on from right down in the basement with no noticable turbo lag ( or maybe thats because my truck is an Auto ) it just pulls hard right from the start. In fact if the truck is idleing in park and the aircon cuts in ( which increases revs slightly ) you can feel the turbo spin up and really start pulling on the auto. My kit with exhaust cost about $ 4000 + gst and about a day for me to install.
You soon forget about the $$$ when you get something that works well.

as someone asked before about when it gets to full 12 psi, i would say by 2500rpm from memory, trucks off the road for a bit while i wait for cert plate and making up some bars for it.

an Xlink is a modification to how the front radius arms are attached to the front axle. This allows the front axle to articulate more freely and further because the front locating bushes are free to articulate instead of binding up.
From what I have read it is a simple and reliable mod which does not greatly affect road manners ( infact the new XLinks can be locked for road use ). You can also adjust your castor angle when fitting if needed.
I think DaveM was installing one last year ?. I should post a new Topic and see who else has experience with them.

Looking into the Superior Engineering arms instead, as they are a good compromise

Apparently the forces aren't that great on the bolt (just going by what I've read, as others, including myself have asked the question on outers), but at full flex, it's scary how much bow you get in the standard radius arms

not beeing smart just after you input iv seen most kits round mine is not a kit as souch more custom to what they are after if want big money spent then i make stainless extractors to tuned lenghs but as we are both awear who is after expansive job these days most want good job at bottom dollar an this is easy way to get reliabe an decent at lowish cost
