I took our two dogs for a walk down by the river this morning and when I went to drive back home the jeep won't start. Turn the key, all the lights come on, beeps at me as it always does, turn the key one more position and nothing, doesn't even try to turn over.

Got it towed home, now to have a look for loose sensors or something

!$#!$!^%@!#$^@$%^# :(

Based on feedback on NAXJA it could be my NSS (Neutral Safety Switch), Go-Jeep has a good write up on cleaning the NSS, so I will try that first.

I now know what the problem is, after searching NAXJA and a number of other sites they suggested NSS, Starter Motor, or Starter Relay as possible sources.

So swapped out the AC Relay for the Starter Relay, but still no go.

Jumped the two appropriate pins where the NSS cable joins into the wiring loom but still no go.

Got under the jeep and jumped the two main poles at the end of the starter with a screw driver, got a big spark but nothing. So hit it quite a few times with a hammer and jumped it again, this time the starter spun.

So back up top, turned the key and it sprung to life. Trying this several times shows that the starter is faulty, sometimes it starts without thumping it, sometimes it needs persuading.

So now time to find someone local who can overhaul the starter.

And all in the drizzle too!!

When it wouldn't start, did you try it in neutral?

http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm

My old XJ would do this sometimes, as well as my Falcon. The bloke I bought my current XJ off spent over a grand trying to sort this out (new CAS, cheers!), I believe it might just be crap in the NSS as above, haven't pulled it off to inspect as it's no major to me.

Sun 18: Looked at the one rear spring thats collapsed the top coil and contemplated taking them out and sending them off to springtown, noticed wife frowning at me.

Mon 19 730am: Off work for the week (after visits to the A&E sunday and talk of having to cut half the right leg off!! Superbug bacteria shitters!!), looked at the rear springs again, noticed wife frowning at me while backing out of the garage.. limped my sorry ass back inside.

Tues 20 830am: Was told flat out that I was not to enter the garage to even touch the Jeep. Went to work (not in the Jeep) to bring some invoicing home. (Told this morning that leg will def stay, but some might have to be attacked, still not allowed to play with the Jeep.)

Last night I removed the starter motor, good coating of oil and dirt, I have a small leak at the back of the rocker cover. Cleaned it down, opened it up & two of the brushes were worn right down & needing a good clean inside.

So took it to Knappo as Jerry suggested, dropped it off at lunch time, back by 5:00 pm tonight, looked like a brand new one. Thanks for the referral Jerry.

Will put it back in tomorrow night probably.

Should have a look at the Neutral Safety Switch while I am under the Jeep since it is also a cause of no starts.

Installed new lower control arm bushes (mission), new steering stabiliser, 2 new tie rod type components and gave it all a grease.

Still have the front shocks and upper control arm bushes to do which im not looking forward to before i do the rear end.

I have all the parts just need the time, i may have under estimated the job, oh well

I must say i bought a full master bushing kit in from the USA along with the tie rods and a new brake pedal rubber and i am impressed with the parts quality.

2.10.09: Removed rear springs and took them to "springtown" to get one retensioned and to have the top coil put back where it was supposed to be. While taking them out i noticed that after fitting the adj upper arms on the rear, that the shocks now rub on the bottom spring mount.... grrrrr

3.10.09: Made up some shock relocation brackets (damn site cheaper than buying them!) and fitted them along with the springs (not alot of improvement with the springs... might be time for some new ones)

Springs and new shock mounts

Gave mine a good run at the Wgtn Jeep Club 'Club Champs'. A fun day out with 15 varied obstacles from blind folded driving, speed runs, hill climbs etc.

Great day out, apart from the wind. 3 Cherokees surprised a lot of the more traditional jeeps, it's all about attitude after all.

Cheers

Just had to have a tutu and emended the tummy tuck by taking off the top 2x1in box-section.

Aside from having to apply some pressure to the exhaust pipe to get it off the heat shield it went in all good. Theres now a "noise" and a slight vibe coming from somewhere but buggered if i can find it. Feels and sounds like when i first fitted it and the exhaust was in contact with the chassis and hence vibing up through the body. Cant find any unusual contact anywhere.

So....... finally finished the mods. Now its time to actually drive the thing.

Took the wagon into the shop a few weeks back after fitting the adj upper arms and asked them to not just make sure the alignment was right, but to go over the underside with a fine toothed comb, and check EVERYTHING.
When driving it, it was still like cornering on marbles, and when hitting off camber road or potholes it was nearly stepping off the road. When under heavy acceleration it was rearing to the right...... Nothing got changed, all good they reckoned.

Got pissed off and started measuring stuff myself to find the rear track bar was off 12mm to one side. Centered that but it still wasnt driving right. It was suggested that there was negative castor and the adj arms needed pulling back to create a pos castor, did that, and kinda slightly improved. Parked it up.

Today took it for a spin and was still crap... so jacked up the front and popped the jacks underneath to have a real good look at the castor... and noticed when leaning on one tyre that the steering damper bolt was loose and the hole was starting to flog out, tightened the crap out of that. Then when underneath, went to move my weight around and grabbed the draglink at the adjustment sleeve, and it bowed in my hand by about 4mm, tightened the crap out of that. While doing so i noticed there was a suspicious shadow between one bolt into the engine mount, and the mount bracket, tightened the crap out of that one, and its partner, and one of the bolts on the opposite side too, the three were between 2 and 4mm loose.

Havent taken it for a spin yet, but picking it might drive a little better.
