Labour weekend 2009 24/25/26 Oct

Post by curly12 »

Went to Ocean Beach on a shiney trip, magical day, fantastic weather, had two new trucks and people come along, good group, saw some young fools drag in some cars on the 4wd track for weekend camping and drinking  , found two newish outdoor chairs in the bush :? and watched someone nearly die ( thanks to the ORE boys he didn't ).

Photos and a new thread to follow.

Guys and girls, I have been sailing and fishing for 35 years, spent months on boats in the Southern Ocean and Antartica, never ever turn you back on the sea, it is a swift and cruel master.......... :(

After a week of school and getting little progress preping the truck for painting, it is finally painted, by myself, and here is the final result:

turned out bloody well in my opinion, and it is the first car i have painted, no runs which im happy about.

also went down by the tannery and had some fun down there, had to christin the new paint job lmao, got it muddy, went though some places, and got stuck, then went home.

i took my mate minty and my little brother down aswell:

spending the weekend with the Mistress again

finally after a week from hell at work (and surviving a round of redundancy's) my mrs decided i needed cheering up, got home from work the other night to find a brand new gasless mig welder sitting on my chair!!! .. just gota love my mrs

Image
Todays job was to try out the new welder, made up some fairlead brackets and miged them on, you know for a cheepy gasless welder it did a pretty good job, tried it on some panel steel, after a bit of a play arond with wire speed I managed to tack thin panel steel "to club truck standard" lol

with the fairlead fitted and wiring sorted out the XD9000 kicked into action on the Mistress, she now has a whip .. err i mean winch

Image

the front tyres where rubbing on the inner guard so got out the BFH and massaged the inner guard a little .. decided to add a set of Buning flares to get the widened rims back in under the guards, 1 down 3 to go .. dosnt look too crappy.

MONDAY

Got 3 of the flares on, just the left front to go.
added some more bar work to the rear as i wasnt happy about the strength for the rear recovery hook
bolted down the storage bins (old steel ammo boxes)
sorted out spare wheel carrier position
finished off rear exhuast system
massaged the front inner guards 2 inches further into the cab and ground 20mm off the roll cage mounts to allow the realignment of the inner guards now the tyres only *just* rub on full lock/articulation in the front
started modifing the intake pipe so i can re-route the air filter to under the glovebox
sealed up some of the factory holes in the firewall.

took it for a strop down the tanker track ... angry fast

did the ashley track which is very had packed and tame at the mo and shot up the okuku, its carrying a good amount of water at the mo, pretty quick flowing but nice and clean so you can still pick out the rocks. Was a good day.

I got the rear and side bars mounted on the mutt. Also ran cable diverters for the centre mount winch, mounted the solenoid pack inside the rear 1/4 panel, redid one of the coil over mounts as I didn't think it was strong enough, chopped up the seat rails to make the new ones for the Monza seats, and then sat back and looked at it and decided there is shit loads left to do  :|

managed to replace the diff head in the 40

made up a new brake line and fitted that

went round to fj40s to see what he was doing with winch

it was decided we head back to my work to use the parts wash

while there we bled the rear brakes up just need to fill the diff with oil now and have a play without breaking it

Took my truck down to Taupo for a CD excercise. Mission in itself getting my mates to finish the barwork, but got there in the end (11pm) ended up sleeping in the truck cos i couldnt be assed setting up the tent, was actually pretty good :D

Ended up winning the 4WD bit of the course (which was pretty tame) I think he was impressed with my High lift jack :D
then used the winch to put tension on a real basic zip line that we setup. all good fun, and learnt heaps!

then today took my brother to the airport, and on the way back the rear drum started squealing something horrible, and oozing black goo (I assume its brake fluid and gunk) so will need to pull that all apart and have a looksee. lucky I got a full spare rearend with everything attatched and the locker in that I might just swap it all over.

I was there too with a mate who just bought a MWB landcruiser (his first 4wd), he now has his first 'got real stuck' under his belt  Had to pull him out of the river in reverese, only took 3 snatch pulls so wasn't too bad. Still gave him sh1t though
