Scott at Union Car Spares doesnt have a workshop or do any machincal work hes just a wrecker who also sells four wheel drive accessories. Good guy and might be able to point you in the direction of a good machanic.
Off the top off my head I cant think of any 4x4 specilists in whangarei. I used to use Clyde Street Auto for all my work on my truck - hes just your adverage joe machanic but I found him to be good.
Autocare in Dent street http://www.autocare.co.nz/ used to promote prepurchase inspections and do warrenties on the inspections, ie if anything goes wrong in the 1st six months they pay of it. They did my Legacy a few years back pretty indept inspection but from memory they a pretty pricey thou.
Scarfies on the piss,

Actually Scott has a brand new 3 bay workshop plus a tyre shop and a bay dedicated to 4x4 accesories. He has had a workshop for about the last eyar and has just bought the workshop next door and refitted it. I'm sure he will do a pre-purchase inspection.
Steve at Autocare is also very good. Steve does my WOF's etc and Scott at Union is a good mate and major sponsor.
