any good 4WD tracks for our trip - advise needed

Post by Daniel »

Hello everyone

We're coming to NZ in Dec/Jan and I'm keen to do some 4WD tracks. Looking for easy ones as I'm a beginner in 4WDing.

The AA site says that about the 'forgotten highway' scenic drive

...Other highlights include several 4WD tracks...

Who can advise me about where to drive offroad, what's allowed and what isn't?

I'd also be interested in doing a training in a club or with others.

I drive a Nissan Safari which unfortunatelly has an auto gearbox, and I guess the rear overhang is pretty big for driving seriousely offroad? Never mind, it's a nice truck and I don't plan to do dangerous offroading...

Thanks for any input 8)

Where in particular do you want the tracks? If you can give a rough idea on when you hope to be in certain areas you may find members who can show you a track or 2

right 8) we arrive on Nov.26th in AKL, heading down to Rotorua and Wellington within 2 weeks or so, then going to south island around the 8th-10th of December. We'll drop the car in Nelson at a friends place on Jan.3rd flying back to AKL (leaving NZ on Jan.4th).

We have no detailed plans so far (as usual 8) )

any advise welcome

Hi Jerry, ok - I've just booked the ferry to Picton on Dec.8th That means we'll be in Welli from 4th to 8th of Dec. or so. Maybe a few days longer if it's possible to change the ferry booking (as I like Welli a lot  ) We'll be staying on a friends boat in Welli so no problems with Hotel bookings...

Would be great to meet you - can you send me your cell phone nr? I'll send you mine as soon as we arrive in AKL (have to buy a new prepaid card, my old one has expired somehow...)

I also can send you my mail address

Thanks so far, sounds gooood

If you plan on doing Maratoto (also know as the wires) on or after the 3rd of Dec I can join you. Depending on how difficult you want to go we could poke our noses into the start of the loop down to the river. I can join you any week day or weekend day as I am off work at that time.
let me know your Rotorua dates and I can see about getting something organised for that too.

Edit: Just read your last post. If you will be in Welly on the 4th, the 3rd will be to late for you. Unfortuntly I don't get back to New Zealand until the evening of the 1st.
Cheers

if you are in Christchurch at all, I can show you a few places locally . If you are heading to ch-ch from Picton you may want to take the molesworth track through to hamner or if leaving nelson to ch-ch then you could do the rainbow rd through to hamner. I think both these roads are open at that time of year. Rainbow rd is a toll rd ($20 I think). Yuou can get more info on these roads from the department of conservation websites.
