well was looking at getting a metal drop saw as im fedup of hacksaw and grinder. but all the metal cutoff saws/drop saws are a bit price, about 200 bucks seond hand. so thought id run an idea threw here o see if you guys thought it was a good idea or just a big no no. if i get a cheap mitre saw (wood cutting) and make a metal grinding disk fit, maybe with washers, then would this be good? or do you think it might have a down side somewhere. hope someone can post there opinion here. thanks.

Re: metal drop saw
I hired a metal drop saw a while back as I had to make a gate for the folks . Went to a hire place and he just gave me a wood drop saw with a grinder blade , just as you mention . I said I was obviously cutting metal and all the sparks would melt you plastic guard , he shrugged his shoulders so I took it home and cut up hundreds of bits of tube .
It seemed to survive but try and find one with not too much plastic . best to get a propper one thou
Chris
PS you want to go into steel sth Akl , they have a drop saw there with a blade on it about 2 ft in dia . They rip through anything I get in a second or so , just like its balsa wood . I asked them how long there blades last and he said about 4 months

Re: metal drop saw
By the time you buy a cheapo mitre saw and a cut off blade it'd be close to $200 anyway. If you have a mitre saw already fit a cut off blade and take it easy should't do any damage apart from the guard maybe melting or warping.
Either way you should consider fire safety. Maybe more so with the dodgyer option.

Re: metal drop saw
we just put in a metal cutting isk on the miter saw, tape the plastic guard up and put screw a flat piece of wood on the back to stop melting the back plastic, just let the blade do the work and dont force ti to much

9inch angle grinder on a pivot bracket
Pully /belt drive to BIG Cutting disk.

Mounted onto a old school desk. best thing is that the 9inch comes out easy for use on its own.

Re: metal drop saw
We use a normal Makita dropsaw with a metal blade when we want to make metal cuts & it works fine.
If your worried about the guard just take it off just keep those fingers clear & use saftey glasses ae metal + eyes = sucky combo!
