Leaking Transfer

Me transfer case is having a serious leak.

Checked the oil a while ago and its was low and wet. Changed it for new stuff now I have nice new oil dripping

I gave it a good clean down to see where the oil is coming from and it appears to be coming from the top of the case. I think its only leaking when in use and then dribbles down. It may be coming from the output seals and getting 'blowen' to the top.

Where are these things prone to leaking? Is it likely to just be the seals? Is it possibly out the top? Breather?

What experience have others had with these and ways to work on it?

hi mate,it pretty common with those gearboxs there is a seal between the box and the transfer,when it fails the oil all falls to the transfer leaving the box with bugger all and sometimes a leak,i have a slight leak on my ute but ive checked the seal and its ok,you can check it by filling gearbox up and leaving transfer drain bung out and if it dosent fall thru and out its ok

if it is the seal in between then you could take out the filler bungs and drill a small hole in each and weld in a little flu and get some hose and some small clamps and run the hose between the two,it work like a recirculating tube,ive often wonderd if the transfer case becoming full of oil due to that seal blowing would result in a pressure build up in it causing the seal to blow,but im not sure on that

That will be worth checking, although last time I checked the transfer case oil level and it was low. I replaced that oil and now its dripping clean oil (so obviously from transfer).

At the time I didn't check the gear box level or change the oil in there.

Will have to have a closer look under there.

NZ bus and truck do a hose that replaces the filler bung on gear box and transfer case, was told it can be an issue with higher use, or hard offroad use. Some think that the gear box can pressurise and either breather can't cope or most likely blocked by mud.
Are you running extended breathers? if not the gearbox one can be got to by cover around gear lever. transfer one is a pain to get at.
Be worth a check and clean.
