Re: turbo options for safaris
Has anyone fitted a DSR 480 turbo to a safari? Trying to find out if the specs will suit the TD42 I am looking for response down low not out right power. I have no problems with the make as I have fitted one to the car for a year now and am happy with its performance for the price. It's the specs I am unsure of. This is all I can find on it at the moment:
DSR480
For Big power application
Water & Oil-cooled, 0.84 turbine housing suits T3 size flange
Internal wastegate with 8psi actuator
Suitable for single-turbo applications on 2.5-4.0 litre engines, or in twin turbo kits on 5.0 to 7.0 litre engines
Specifications:
Compressor inlet pipe 69mm, compressor outlet pipe 50mm
48 trim compressor; inducer 53mm, exducer 76.5mm
Turbine wheel outlet 56mm, outer diameter 73mm

I'm sure this has been raised before but I think it got deleted by the moderator.
What is the recommended ar value for a 4.2 diesel?
I know there is no exact answer but I'm looking at intercooling and turboing my tow wagon.

Re: turbo options for safaris
hey guys just throught id add my 2 cents
i made up a custom set up for my safari consisting of a home made manifold, trademe turbo, 3'' exhaust
non intercooled
turbo is a t3 based turbo with compressor a/r of .60
exhaust a/r of .63
i find that for me the exhaust is abit big for what i want ( boost down low ) so i'll prob change it some day but for now has made a huge difference in power
if i foot flat it in say 3rd gear from say 1200rpms i slowly get boost of about 2-4psi, then at 2000rpm i get about 6-8psi building quickly from there to 15-16psi at 2500-3000rpm
so yea as i said exhaust side is to big otherwize i would have the wastgate set to 14psi and would have that all the way from hopefully 1500-2000rpm
hope that helps out
cheers Jacob

Re: turbo options for safaris
um yea its a lot higher i haven't tried to see what i could get max but can cruz at 140 easy
cheers

Re: turbo options for safaris
Not sure of the specs but the Garret T3 I used to have (safari aftermarket kit) would have 14psi at 2000rpm. All they have on them is Safari with no specs so a bit hard to tell what the ar was.
Nissan Terrano coilovers, turboed VH45, Safari axles, and some other stuff.
Re: turbo options for safaris
yea would be good to know what the safari brand turbo kit turbo a/r's are but if we knew that then we would be able to make up our own i guess

Re: turbo options for safaris
I spoke with Aaron in rotorua today- he is supposed to be the TD42 god and he certainly knows his stuff.
He has said to me that the safari kit uses a TD05 from the early evo's (1-2-3). He has said that they are too small and run out of puff for what they like to do.
He has said that the later model EVO bigwheel turbo's are a much better bet.
which is good because thats what i was wanting to use from the start.
Also had a chat with him about his modified diesel pumps. I learnt alot to be honest. It has always seemed like a rip; 2k for a modified diesel pump, but considering the increase in power and the fact it has a boost compensating aneroid fitted it actually sounds like a far better idea than going with an NA v8 or chev turbo v8.

Re: turbo options for safaris
Aaron does know his stuff and has built the pump on the truck we have just finished. However how much power do you want? A standard Safari kit will produce a lot of power and for most it is way more than they need. But the pumps he does will do a lot more than a Safari kit turbo will. The one we have just done has a Safari kit, a few other things to the motor
, and one of Aarons pumps. It is doing 26psi and you could say it goes quite well
. It does run out a bit (relatively speaking) at higher rpm (above about 3400rpm) but for most it would be quite irrelevant as you drive these motors at 2500 to 3500 anyway.
As for the cost of Aarons pumps, consider this. Have you priced a standard recondioned pump lately? You ill find you basically get a modified pump for not very much more than a standard one. Performance gain for $$$ would be pretty hard to beat, assuming you already have turbo etc. You will not go wrong taking Aarons advice! he isn't some techno weeny who has all the theory. He figures out mods, then goes and races them until the motor explodes. He knows what works because he has done it.
You can not compare a petrol V8 to a turbo deisel. They will have similar power but it is completely different in delivery so the decision needs to be made by what you want and how you drive. I have had both in the same truck and it is different, not better or worse, just different. But for most of you a good mildly modified TD42 is going to have all the power you will ever need and will be cheaper to setup and run than a V8 conversion. If you are competing then have a look at the trucks and you will see most are going the V8 way but that is a different ball game.

Re: turbo options for safaris
The turbos used in the Safari kits are a Garret, not a Mitsi. The TD05's (as used on Evo's and others) are used in the DTS kits, the specs of which I have posted numerous times on here before. If you look, you'll also see the various compressor side upgrade options that are available.

Re: turbo options for safaris
yeah i got the td05 in mine and only running 12psi she puts a bit of power into the machine. going to intercool it soon and take the boost to 14psi. at the moment it does a 0-100kmh of 12.5 seconds on 31 road tires hahahahaha.
as mentioned above, when it is revving out the boost starts dropping away from about 3500rpm but by the time it gets to 4000rpm its time to change gear any way.

Re: turbo options for safaris
Thanks gary.
Its quite amazing how the people using these systems have a totally different opinion and have found totally different facts than the people who have drawn conclusions from just the turbo maps.
Is yours the small wheel TD05 from earlier evo's, Gary?

Re: turbo options for safaris
yeah td05h 16g, starts spooling up about 1200-1400 rpm get good torque out of it, anything on these motors is a great improvement really. i havent modded anything else yet, tappets need resetting, could probably throw some new injectors at it and the fuel pump mods sound cool, but cant really afford to have off the road for too long its my daily drive, as is its 85kws at the wheels, which is a hell of an improvement over the 54kws it was.

Re: turbo options for safaris
hey guys i've switched my turbo to a td05 16g and it has made a huge diff in the spool up starts at 1100-1200rpm at 2000 getting between 12-15 depending where my foot is
so its great i say would like to have one with bigger pipe outtlets but it'le do me for now dumb lotto's rigged lol
one thing i would like to know is if anyone else uses the wastgate??
i just run mine in unlimited and use the diesel to limit the boost...if i try and use the wastegate i get to high egt's putting too much fuel thru i guess??
pretty much get a max of 20psi if i push it or am towing and a max off 600c egt's
but normaly try and keep them to 500c unless im playing
sweet

Re: turbo options for safaris
Slowly getting things togeather on my home built manifold, trade me TD0516g turbo+3'' exhaust.
Curious as to where folks have been sourcing there oil and water supply for the turbo?
I'm assuming the vacuum pump supply and return are sufficient as far as the oil goes?
Any help including pic's appreciated
