calling Zuk owners ..strange noise * solved but not fixed*

Post by meece4x4 »

Hey all, my Zuk (1600 16V) motor has been making a strange noise lately, just off idle to about 2000 rpm there is a definate whine/vibration/rumble ( Sounds a little bit like a dry thrust bearing) coming from *front* of the motor, if i hold my hand on the plastic cambelt cover i can feel it vibrate slightly as it goes thru the range it makes a noise, however the whine sounds like it's coming from the top cam pulley when standing head on ... from the side it sounds lower :?

over 2000 rpm it's not as noticeable, at idle it's not there either .. 1200-1400 and it very loud

could it be cam tensioner?? or is the front cam bearing packing up?

cheers Meece

Pull the crank pully and check the keyway. They are known to shag out. Can evidentally be fixed with a bit of that liquid metal stuff. (may pay to check the crank timing belt pulley to.)

As per PM, check the tensioner, just incase this has vibrated loose. Check timing marks while you are there to make sure the belt hasnt jumped a notch if it is loose.

Never heard of that one before, just check that the guide shim on the crank pulley is fitted the right way round so as to guide and the belt in towards the pulley before you put the cover back on.

Do you have a spare plastic timing gear cover? it may be that the cover is warped.

cover was warped ... fixed it with some gentle heat from a hot air gun ..a couple of washers and a rubber mallet! ... all good now :)
