Well i have finally had enough so the truck is up for sale, it comes with two 5mge motors (one with 7m oil pickup and sump other standard) has discs on the rear two inch body lift fuel tank has had a two inch lift as well, for the full price i will leave in the all pro offroad handbrake system otherwist i will take out and a hand brake system will have to be made up for it, i am have a few little problems with the motor as i will turn over backfire now and then but will not fire up and run got to be something stupid. has a lsd in front and open diff in rear, uboltflip in rear from all pro USA. you would have to supply own wheels as i will be keeping the ones on it, had a 12 inch bob on the rear and canopy cut and fireglassed to suit, will be a good offroader once the little problems are sorted, i just don't have the time and have a new bady on the way as well.truck had a great lift when i had in the south but since moving to the bay just had problems so have lost interest in it, pm me or tex,phone 027 2889783 craig $1600ono

To me it sounds like timing for sure, I know you've had the dizzy out and dead timed it, try that again and take the front cover off and check the both cams timing as well, if it's back firing it appears it has everything it needs to run except timing is wrong
I have seen a bottom cam pulley buggered where it is keyed on to the crankshaft, that causes major timing issues as well.

To get a good dead line on timing with the indexed cams that the 5m's have, Take the covers of each cam. At the frontish (between the 2nd and 3rd lobe if I recall) there is a hole in the bearing journal, after taking the timing belt off, you turn each cam until a corresponding hole in them lines up with this hole. Put a drill bit of the right size in each one and that will zero set the cams so you can refit the belt after setting btdc on the crank and get the indexed cam wheels timed in at the correct place.

Just another idea anyway.

But it still sounds like an AFM issue. I had the same problem with mine, twice. First time there was a split in the lines between the AFM and injectiion, and the second time I had put the AFM on back to front

Just had a good look again at your thread and seen this pic



That cam timing looks wrong, would be good to see a shot with the cams on thier marks, but one cam looks more advanced than the other
just go through the dead timing process, and get both those cams on their marks and that sucker should run
Mine would run albeit rough without the AFM plugged in

cheers tim nib's and rok, with that pic of the cam wheel it isn't lined up with those little marks on the covers but when it is at tdc those marks line up so what i am going to do at the moment is put the other motor that was running back in as the one in the pic had the head done with new seals etc and hopefully that might solve a problem and try and sort it from there, as much as i donn't want to sell if it won't go this time then it will go and get myself a diesel again maybe a 2.8 or a 3.0 this time as i was gonna keep my locker winch bar and winch and tyres. cheers craig oh and nib's cheers for the congrats i can't wait for number two baby to arrive bring on may

on teh thermostat housing there are 2 sensors, one of them does water temp for the ece and they play up, run bad, fould plugs and wont start, un plug 1 and see if its better or bridge the pins and start it I cant remember if its bridged or open but that will tell ya if its the problem. very common with these.

well got it started yesterday, when the head was done the mechanic put the two cam gears at the front on upside down so i had to rotate the cams a full 180 degrees to have it at tdc, cheers grant for your method thats the way i did it and it started on the fourth turn over, so in the end it was something simple that can turn into a nightmare, it is running but rough needs a bit of fine tuning now
