Broken bolt on my Patrol

Post by FORGE1 »

Anyone got any iteas on how I can get a snapped thread out of my thermistat housing?

I snapped the long one that is at the back and there is no thread sticking out when i pulled the housing off so getting quite dissapointed about this new patrol as it feels like it was never looked after properly and when I do something simple like change the thermistat or other small things and it turns into a 3day problem and thats getting anoying.

Is that back bolt a main one? could I do without it?

you'll have to drill the old bolt out and run a tap through it to clean the remains out of the thread

if the bolt is broken off flush you could put a spot of weld on top of the bolt and then place a nut over top and and then fill the rest of the nut up with weld from bolt upwards. then simply undo the nut with bolt attached. hope this helps other wise drill a hole and get a easy out, (just make sure you drill straight.

Know how your feeling mate my patrol required much more work than the guy i brought it off let on and it has been a painfull six months to get to wof standard of vehicle. It had a wof and I checked it three times including on hoist with a mate but you never see it all! Rust under battery, rust rear seat mounts,Lpg,petrol tank had no sender fitted and leaked! was empty when i checked it.All sway bar links worn out, exhaust mounts broken, frost plugs leaking & cooling system was rusty water under a layer of nice fresh coolant, heater hose's including lpg gas water pipes all worn out and started leaking, started smoking abit so did valve stem seals, tyres should not have got the wof due to non highway repairs, stone chip in cva area on screen wof fail, passengers seat rails broken, gear shift floor cut out after body lift not finished and panel not secured down, crack in exhaust manifold, and rad fan cracked up,oil pressure switch leaking, engine mount broken.I did see a few of these things on inspection however if Onehunga testing station had done the job they should have it would have saved me about $1500-$2000 in parts lucky i could fix it myself. But it delayed my wheel, winch, and bar upgrage by months and lucky my wife is understanding. And if the last owner of Rk1515 reads this yes Im glad I now have a vehicle in good condition that i would say is fit for the road.Thats my moan for today!

I was told about doing that but the mechanic wanted $100+ GST just to drill out and retap it which I thought was a bit of a rip off. So I drilled it myself and got just about to the bottom of what was in there, and 'SNAP' there goes my drill bit and its stuck for good. we tried for hours just to get it out and ended up cracking the housing for that specific bolt so after throwing my tools around that the frustration I have given up so I may need to replace the entire housing unless anyone else has other ideas on this repair? Keeping in mind the rest of the bolt and drill bit are still in there.

Yeah I was told that it was a great family car and has never given them any problems as was used to tow a race car on the odd occasion apart from that just family trips I was told it has a new radiator and thermistat so I was glad I didnt pay for it but when I got home the water went from a green colour to a gritty rusty colour and it kept heating up so I thought I would clean it out an replace the old stuff which was surpose to be new and this is just the start I have replaced all mufflers and roten pipes oil change was discusting clumps of crap came out and filters jammed on also was told the windscreen leeks so got a new one and it kept leaking and was told the gutter rust was all proefessionaly repared and thats where my leaks comming form so i now need new roof gutters and the side of the roof all needs to be replaced as well> I should hav kept my SWB at least I was perfect wen I sold that.

I tried with vicegrips to get the drill bit out but there wasnt enought to grab on to so I decided this arvo to put the housing back on and gasket goo it all up to at least get me to a mates workshop and 1 of the bolts that goes into the bottom of the housing which going into the head snapped off aswell so I give up lol.
