Hilux clutch issues

Post by nstacey »

The clutch engageswith the slightest movement of the pedal from the floor, have bled the clutch system twice. We think it needs a larger thrust bearing. There was a few to choose from for the L series motors when I bought the clutch kit. Which sucks because I don't want to have to drop the gearbox again.

Tried this solution, went right up to a 20mm longer pushrod which was the largest I could get in between the clutch fork and the hydraulic pushrod thing. still got the same symptoms, maybe slightly reduced. I should mention its a brand new heavy duty 3L clutch kit on a 5L diesel. The guy at the clutch shop sold me the factory hilux 5L thrust bearing as we added up the measurements between old set up (flywheel, plate and thrust bearing) and new and that thrust bearing allowed for the difference in sizes between 2L gear and 3L, have since used the 3L bellhousing (although there doesn't seem much if any difference). From memory there was about 3-5mm difference between my old 2L thrust bearing (which I think is same as 3L) and what I bought. So I guess as Landy Rover's solution didn't work that means the clutch fork is reaching its maximum possible throw? So do I go buy the 3L thrust bearing and drop the gearbox? or is there something else there could be?

Hiluxs have a rubber block on the master cylinder rod.

These can bend sideways once the rubber gets old meaning you are not getting full travel from the pedal to the master cyl.

Worth a check

So long as the clutch fork isnt being obstructed by anything it should just be an adjustment thing, pulling the gearbox out and putting a longer release bearing in is the same as lengthing the pushrod coz its just a leverage thing... a bit like a seesaw

Are the master cylinder and slave cylinders both in good condition and up to pushing the extra weight of a new pressure plate?

I see what you're saying. But to get the longer pushrod in I had to push in the cylinder on the pushrod as far as it would go, as there was no movement in the clutch fork, thrust bearing would be just sitting on the outside of the pressure plate. So I don't think it gained anything with the longer pushrod because what it gained in length was lost by retracting the slave cylinder. There isn't a huge amount of resistance in the clutch pedal. Slave cylinder is Dace's old one and master cylinder as far as I know is my original so 25 years and 245k old

Is you master cylinder displacing enought fluid to push the piston out far enough in the slave cylinder? You might have to upgrade your master cylinder if it isnt?

Getting really frustrated with this thing now, got the HD thrust bearing, about 5mm larger than what I had. installed it got the same issue. Are the pushrod cylinders matched to the master clylinder? Dace's one looks exactly the same as my old one but has '98' stamped in the side, my old one shows '97'. Is this to do with the bore size? Should I swap pushrod cylinders and see if that makes a difference? Took the day off work tomorrow to try take it to get the exhaust done. Don't think thats happening
