the engine does have fuel injection already but it is mechanical so a little crude

It is really easy. Get a manifold and bolt on a turbo. Fit oil and water lines, plumb the intake etc then get it tuned. The hard part will be setting the fuel as you'll have to monitor afr at all rev points and that is going to cost!!! You will also need to adjust timing and depending on compression ratio (and fuel grade) possible lower compression. That really only should be done by either dishing the pistons or enlarging the combustion chamber, don't fit a spacer between the head and block as that will remove the quench (?) zones and therefore cause detonation.
So it is really easy to fit a turbo and make it go but to actually get a performance increase that won't destroy the engine, that is a different story. If it is efi and electronic ignition then low boost is pretty simple. Manual injection (or carb) and distributer can end up just really fuel hungry without much better performance.
