Zuki Build

Post by Swamped »

Picked this up on the weekend after getting the price down a bit. Live tags till april. All stock except a wrx seat and 31 bfgs.
Failed warrant due to rust in doors but now has other problems. ie Rattly wheel bearings, flogged Leaf bushes, A suspected bullet hole in roof lol. Otherwise it drives good and engine runs really well. Unsure where to go with it, fix it for the road or use it as a trailer truck.

I'm out towards raglan. Will try find out bout the other trucks down the road this week. And yeah i was thinking bout just A-framing it but itd be nice to be able to drive it on the road. Was just after something i didn't mind dinging up a bit offroad. Plates will go on hold for now. Still have a gearbox to put in another 413 before I can do anything with this one but hopefully I can start in the next couple weeks.

MMm well got my brother fitting the other gearbox. I went and harassed my neighbour about parts yesterday but hes got sfa of what I need. All he had was a couple 410 carbs and a 413 motor with cooked rings I think. Anyways, just making it run a bit nicer but found this mint, performance enhancing exhaust modification the last owner made.... Was jammed in there tight as hell.

Thought i should post an update.

So far:
Replaced all the suspension bushes
Started panelbeating front guards.
Got cheap replacement doors.
Stripped interior for paint and gotten rid of most of that stupid black sound deadening crap on the floor. Almost good to sandblast now.
Scored some 12 spoke 15x8s for a good price. Given me ~50mm+ maybe extra track width on each side.
Rebuilt carb so idles and throttles up far better now.
Fitted new front wheel bearings - Cheers nzhunter for pressing and helping to fit them correctly.

To do.
Need to decide where to go with the suspension.
Might do a spring over axle setup. What are the pros and cons of this???
Other panel work to repair rust spots then prep and paint
Make wrx seat setup look less dodgey.
Make handbrake actually brake.
Get the 410 transfer I bought from aucks to use for making a rocklobster tcase.

Going away for a month on the 4th so things will be stalled for a bit.

It seems relatively straight forward from what I've read about it. Is it hard to cert with that done? The van I took that V8 out of the other weekend had it done and it was never brought up at warrants and was safe as.
Be sweet with factory springs for now if I did that too?? Was going to lengthen the shackles a little bit too. The factory ones look real weak or am I wrong with that assumption??

Cheers.

weak compared to what? the axles?

Just do spring over and cert it if there are any issues.

Getting that post count up eh

Anyways just wondered if it was normal for them to flex a lot. They just seem to be real thin pressed steel. It may be the bolts moving inside the shackles??. Of course the bushes allow a bit of movement but theres definitely more movement than I expected.

Given the rust in the seams between the arches and outside skins of the guards I may have to cut and push the outter edges of the arch up. This what people mean by virtual lift??

Cheers.

I was just winding you up on the SOA. I definatly wouldn't SOA a Zook on standard running gear, not unless your going to fit some training wheels :D :D

The stability of the truck when going accross a slope or ending up in a situation that you didn't intend is a big thing.

SOA will kill that. Your COG (center of gravity) ends u in the clouds.

Unless you put some lux axles under it, then you have the exta width to maintain a good COG.

The leaf sprung 413's flex the best, better than the later model coily's.

As the word "flex" suggests, stuff has to be able to move, deform, bend and give.

The best combination for off road in a zook is some nicely worn in leaf packs, the soft squishy factory rubber bushes and some foam cell shocks (not gas pressurised).

The standard shackles are all good, thats all i'm running. Bent one on a rock though

haha cheers for the tips man. I've been having a big read on outers recently. Think I will sort all the panel work first and keep an eye out for different springs. Going to check out UBZ's truck today hopefully and see what hes done. And pick up some cheap parts in aucks!!!!!

Anyways chassis is going to be sandblasted and repainted. It has got some of the ugliest factory welds I've seen on a vehicle btw. Have finished panelbeating the front guards. And the one rear guard. Will have a go at the virtual lift and see about some 2inch lift springs for it. Whoever had it before me was a bit of a cowboy as everything has sealys all-clear instead of proper gasket stuff and one universal is welded in place - no circlips I'm guessing. Anyways the minor repair/rebuild may have gone out the window now.

Havn't posted for a while so thought I might post up a bit more progress. Havn't done much due to going to Antarctica but back at it now. Sandblasted and painted chassis, had gearbox stripped down and rebuilt with new seals and bearings, rebuilt both seized brake calipers, got new rotors, stripped tyres off my 15x8s for sandblasting and painting.
O and scored a swift with a possible future donor engine for $80 warrant and rego'd :)

Need to:
Replace crankseal
Source some springs and u-bolts - When money allows
Do diff seals
Get onto the panel work for the bigger tyres.

Yeah I'd prob be keen so just hold onto em.
With the swift I havn't blanked that EGR line on the block yet. Would be nice to know how to replace that stupid plug. Runs mint with duct tape jammed over the leak atm lol. but yeah will blank it if need be.
Lol proper workshop - dirt floor spec. Got a heap of sweet carpet so i dont get covered in crap working under the trucks now.

Just peeled the tyres off my 15x8s and stamped inside the rim (like between the beads) it says "15x8 ROH (Not for road use)" Bit weird but on the balancing machine they come up sweet so i don't know why its there.

I'll stick one up for you tomorrow. Its not used by my swift or either of the SJ's so am unsure why its actually there. Looks like an unused sensor port or something.
