best Place to buy - Lock Right Locker

ok , decided i need to put a locker in the front of my IFS surf , to make it reliable, and stop blowing diffs every time im out.

where is the best place in NZ to buy a Lockright or similar from ? Or am I better off importing one from Aus / US?

lockrite from the states is way better than the ozzy copy personally i would that way not sure where to get em maybe import yourself as they only weigh bout 2kg

A mate just received one today - NZ$503 incl freight. It took about a month from when he ordered it....

I don't think it'll stop you blowing diffs though - The lockrite just replaces the spider gears so adds nothing to the overall strength of the diff. I think you need a detroit or ARB locker to make the diff itself stronger. I may be wrong though...

thats a good price.Did he get the one that replaces the side gears as well? Rockey road can be a little hard to deal with at times
got quoted $830 inc from a outfit in ChCh this afternoon.

I know it wont strengthen the diff that much, the plan is the transfer the break point out to the CV instead, as you can change them on the trial.
Also means that you can crawl over the harder stuff and not have to light it up all the time

yeah rocky-road.com is the best bet, where i got mine. the strength is not in the diff but how it stops the diff self destructing. Surfs have a little problem when they have had their torsion bars wound up they have something stupid like 35mm of down travel. This effectively allows the wheels to spin and grip and its this sudden shock loading that destroys the spiders. with a locker this doesnt happen as the wheel that lifts keeps the same speed as the weel on the ground, no chance to run up to twice the speed and then come down grip and shock load. Your driving style changes as well. no longer are you giving it death to get to the top, you just crawl up thus saving on damage to the truck and also the track. A win win situation all round really

And my A-Arms are flat , gives me an impressive 100mm of down travel Same Surf problem though.

i ordered mine from there. not so good on the communication but they do get there in the end. never had any issues with my locker from there. got two for $700. fully locked surf for $700 and never a problem in 4 years

could definatley be keen for the right price, me motor went mint the other day, so i think thatl stay for now, so i can throw money elsewhere....

Group buy = getting picked up for GST and customs fees. From what I understand on http://www.customs.govt.nz/importers/Pr ... araTitle01 if it gets calculated as worth over $450 you'll be charged, shipped by itself may be a favourable exhange rate/slip through.

Yep your right...customs will charge you if the the cost of duty etc is $50 or greater

For a Group Buy there are two issues,

If the cost of the goods plus freight cost is more than NZ$400 you will pay GST.
Also if the cost of the goods is more that NZ$1000 you need an NZ Customs client code.

As for bulk discount I have bought a few in the past and they haven't given a discout as their prices are pretty sharp.

As for Petrolhead70 on TM I think you will find his prices are a bit dearer than mentioned above, not sure about the ifs one but for the 8" 2 pinion it was more like $795 and $695 for the 4 pinion.


I haven't got any ifs ones but know of some 8" ones.

If i'd have known earlier i could have got you one for $485au delivered to my door in cairns for a lokka from 4wdsystems. Otherwise 4wd accessories in christchurch sell them too and it equals about the same price (when not on special) when you convert to nz$

Why worry about the group buy if you are not going to sharpen the price? Tim's price seems like a bloody good deal (I paid more than that for my 4 pinions 4 years ago). If you have the cash to spend, pm him. I have purchased some gear off Tim and he is excellent to deal with. And no, he did not sell to me through this forum, so I don't believe he was breaking any vendor issues

Wouldn't really class myself as a vendor, I just get a few extra bits when I order stuff for myself and a few other guys who ask, helps keep the freight cost down as it spreads it accros more parts.

Rocky Road 267$ USD for the IFS locker #1611. (381$ NZD so under GST amount for customs) $70 Freight to Auckland. So approx $480 NZD to my door.

LowRange 290$ USD for the locker (414$ NZD)
60$ Freight to Auckland. Sp approx $500 NZD to my door

Think ill be buying mine from RockyRoad, as i have brought stuff from them before. Apart from being slow their service is pretty good.

Don't see it being a problem on the trial as you will be driving heaps slower over things.
Mike has been running one for 4 yrs and swears by it . That's pretty sage advice in my book.

I can always recover some of my costs in the future if i SAS, by selling my front diff to you.

I've got an auto lokka in the front of my beam axle lux. Have had it running with manual steering up until now, and it is heavier in the steering. You also find it self corrects and wants to straighten up quite quickly as you accelerate out of a turn. But you get used to it. The gains in traction are well worthwhile. Have put a power steering box in with my motor swap. I will put a lockright in the rear down the track as my LSD is pretty rubbish. I have driven up to about 40kph in 4wd on gravel and once you know how the lokka reacts its easy to judge.

It is possible to fit a Supra 7.5 inch LSD into an IFS front Diff. I used to have a link to a web site that showed it.
We fitted one to a mates Surf several years ago, it was relatively easy once you have found the right Supra diff

What is your issue here?
With my front end Lock-Right installed I can still turn just as tight as I used to before the L-R went in. It makes absolutely no difference unless the corner is exceedingly slippery and the sprag clutch has locked up due to being powered up by the motor.

They work quite differently to a conventional locker and thus I think you need to understand how an Auto-unlocker (Lock-Right, Lokka, Detroit etc) works. If the sprag clutches sense a difference in torque reaction being generated between the 2 wheels, one of them will release. If conditions are slippery enough (or a wheel in the air) for no differential wheel torque then the diff will stay locked. In this case as you turn, one wheel will be able to slip and you will still turn just as tight.

One track I drive a lot for some of my work (sometimes 6 or 7 times a day) has 7 hairpin turns that my SWB Prado can only just get around. If I turn too early or late I have to back up and take a second bite just like the LWB Prados or any Hilux has to. The L-R has made no difference in turning circle on this track.

No you won’t!
I always drive on gravel in 4wd. Being the KZJ-71W, that’s short wheel base wide body, my Prado has a wheel track that is nearly as wide as the wheelbase is long. Thus when you push it through corners on gravel in 2wd, it is very hard to drift controllably, as it tends to snap back very fast when you correct the slide.
So I always use 4wd on gravel and on some winding roads will sit on 110 or 120 km/h.

The Lock-Right has made no noticeable difference to the handling of the vehicle on gravel, other than the slightly heavier steering and the faster re-centering of the steering wheel.
As nstacy says there is a technique to where you apply or remove the power in the turn, as there is some torque steer however it does not detract from the driving experience on a fast winding gravel road.

Go for it! Buy one, you won't regret it.

Im used to driving a truck with a lock-right in the rear but have never had one in the front.
I to prefer 4hi for gravel ,as i feel much more in control of the truck.

As you say I believe it will be just a mater of adjusting driving stlye to suit the mod.
After driving around with no front sway bar for 6 months ,it should be a piece of cake.
