muffler talk

Post by new2zukes »

well will be needing to make up an exhaust for my truck soon, its a toyota 3y motor, its going to be 2.5inch with muffler. a few questions on mufflers though if i were to say get a skyline muffler and then find another muffler of a similar size would they sound the same? or could they be differant and do mufflers act like a fire arrestar or whatever they are called, to lower the chance of sparks coming from exhaust. i have a coby muffler on my 1300 zuke motor and its as noisy as it was without a muffler so i presume that was just a fire arrester. i also presume the bigger the muffler the quieter the exhaust. any help answering some of the questions would be much apreciated.
thanks.

Try turning colby backwards, it should increase back pressure very slightly and make it a little quiter.

Every muffler is different, some packed with steel wool some packed with fibreglass. Then you have the internal hole size in the exhausts, length of tubes etc, as women say size does not matter    in this case it does not design does.

Sorry to say they are all built to different specifications, the skyline one may have good flow and low noise as it was from a performance engine.

As far as spark arresters go the spark is heated carbon making its way through the system this carbon (soot) can be thin flakes in the exhaust on the other side of the muffler shaken loose. so you still need a spark mesh.

More needed on diesels and motorbikes because of higher egt's but insurance would be unhappy if you were not using one.

Just my 2c

Nibz, I wouldn't buy the muffler yet, It might be rusted out before you need it    .

Nibz , just pulling your left one  , your builds coming along nicely.

I have a short 2.5" Coby on "OLD SMOKEY" and to my old ears she's as -----

QUITE AS F##K,

FITZY

PS, with the hair dryer on the old 3B a straight pipe will be fine,
you won't hear the exhaust noise over the DARK BOY'S

well i have 2 zuke mufflers sitting at my place so thought id cut one open to have a look, it seems to have no trace of fibreglass steel wool or any other sound proofing thing but it has 3 compartments and presume this is to limit noise, i also would say it restricts the exhaust gases too as it has to go round alot of corners. if someone knows more id be realy interested. i presume welding a 2.5inch pipe over input and output would be a bad idea due to flow restrictions? well here is a pic of what i found.

this muffler is a multiple resonant chamber design they are a lot larger than coby style units.

I think the "baffle" design uses the soundwave collisions to break each other down and cancel each other out.

Not sure I used fibreglass ones on the bike

well i have decided i will make my own muffler as i have all the steel to make one i just need the wool so i found this stuff on trademe.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 949653.htm
i will get a bit of panel steel and make a tube then make 2 cone shapes for each end then get a bit of 2.5inch pipe and drill alot of holes in it then pack with fibreglass wool then weld it all up. i have also seen someone make one on pirate's. i also dont have much room to put a muffler as it is sitting inbetween the g/box and the chassis rail.

well as i seem to change my mind like the wind i have decided to go with a flowsound muffler. i decided i already have enough things to do without adding another thing to the list.here is the listing
