endless air .

Post by ski »

I have a dive bottle for pumping up my tyres and the costs are getting up in refills and inspection etc,So I started reading about endless air using your aircon pump.I don't want to get rid of my aircon and looking at space for and another pump is not and option.I have a cruiser 4.2 non turbo diseil and the aircon pump is sitting high up next to the airbox so its bloody handy to work on .Question for you clever people is can I cut and place a tee and valves into the gas lines to give me the options of endless air or gas for the aircon,by using valves I can switch to either option. Is this possible or just a hair brain idea on the last day of the year.Cheers guys.

So when people say they use their aircon pump for air ,do they mean that they have altered the pump to run air instead of gas. Thanks for your reply.

Shit, I'm lucky. GFot a mate that runs a dive shop, he swaps it for one in cert when it expires. Got a bro-in-law that's a fireman, he fills them for nothing for me. Out of interest, what's it costing you.

I think its $50 for inspection and $6. for refilland I get 12 tyres to a bottle, pumping simexs from 10-36 psi.Over time the costs are adding up.

They will pump air as I have seen them set up, but your aircon won't work again. I prefer the aircon as it also manages to dry the truck out when it swims or rainy trips. I primarily use mine to reset popped beads or run air tools. Got a normal compressor for reinflating tyres.

To use your aircon for a compressor you have to get rid of the gas. The compressor is a normal pump that sucks in one side and blows out the other. So you'd need to choose what you want to pump, aircon gas or air for tyres but not both :(

Another option if you wanted to keep your Aircon would be to put in a reasonable sized 12v compressor and connect this to a small tank...

I have a decent sized supercheap one which I have had for ages and still seems to work ok, it will even put a 33" Tyre back on a bead, with a tank these work better.....

You could also make a bracket and fit a 2nd aircon pump (assuming you have the room to do it) and convert this to air, you would need to run bigger belts etc

To answer you questions ...
As has been said above no you can't use the same pump for both jobs because ....
Each time you switch over you would lose some gas ...
Air Con systems contain oil in with the gas to keep the pump lubricated
When people talk about using their aircon pump as a compressor they are using it only for air.
Only some aircon compressors can be used as a compressor as they require oil.
Do a search on here 'cause there has been a lot of discussion on here as lots of people have done it.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

The ones I have seen have all been on cruiser or prados. What size tank you using Jerry and where did you get it from. may just do the same myself and stop lugging a heavy dive cylinder around.

I have just used the 12v compressor so far, the ones I have seen using this have 1L + tanks, you can get small 12v compressors with tanks these days otherwise you can get used tanks at refrigeration places

Why not a 12v electric motor of suitable size (starter i would think) driving an aircond pump?. I'm not up with current draws etc, so you clever electrical fellas can come to the party on this one.

starter motor is not really designed for constant use, but you could use another motor. however single biggest problem is you will run the battery flat in no time, even with motor running.

use a smaller motor that the alternator can keep up with, but it will take longer to pump. you could just get a couple of the usual pumps and join them together.

with normal electric pumps, tanks might be a bit of a waste. you really need big pressure to make it worth while.
