HELP my diesel swallowed a lot of water

righto then, you've all probably been waiting for me to post this up, so here goes

if you havent already seen it elsewhere, I was a dumb cnut and went swimming in the river without a snorkel

short story is that I went the wrong way, once I knew I was in a hole I was on the loud pedal to try and pull the front back up out of the hole, but alas the motor just died on me

it wasnt a violent stop and it didnt run on or anything, it just stopped instantly


for those that dont know, its a 12 valve 1 HDT in an 80 series landcruiser


I am broke as faark and want to know how to fix it

have drained motor and there was a good 4 litres of water in sump, plus turbo was full and airbox as well
Am in the process of pulling injectors and glow plugs to hand crank it over and get more water out and listen for any knocking before keying it over


So has anyone done this stupidity before and how did it end

am I wasting my time coz I now have a ticking time bomb or is it worth doing a small fix or whatever it takes to get it going again

all thoughts will be taken gratefully

Hi Skid, sorry to read of your problem, I think you know the answer, If you don't strip and check it out you will have a grenade with the pin half out. You have a great ORE brother hood up there, accept there help and strip the motor down, I would say the only damage will be bent rods and may be valves, the old girl is probably due for a set of mains and big ends anyway. Cost ------ Gasket Set, Mains and Big Ends, second hand rods and may be a few valves, I would say the troops will even supply there own DRINKS. Your right,

Hi Skid what Fitzy said is right. It has to have the head and sump taken off and then all the pistons removed to check for damage.
You have lots of offers of help so it won't cost you anything to look.

You may get away with a few bent rods but valves, big ends and main bearing caps and bolts need to be checked for stretching. There is also a possibility the block has been split.You wont know until you look.

As Fitzy said second hand rods and caps etc would be fine.

When you find what is needed post it up and the brotherhood here may be able to source something cheap.

my mate put his isuzu in a river up to the roof and drowned it but when we got home just drained the oil/water(around 5L) ,turned it over by hand till all the water was out put new oil in,turned it over for a while and it started and has been running for almost a year now no problems. took around 5 hrs from the time we got it home to when it was running mint again

Hay bro how did you get on with this engine, I was going to add that all you should need to do is pull the head and check the deck hights of all the pistons,(gap when piston is at TDC to the block, if they are all the same height then no worrys about the bottom end, if it was fresh water no damage should have been done to bearings or anything else, check all the valves are moving, replace head and fill with new oil, run for about 10 min then change the oil again, should be sweet for ages. All the diesels I have repaired that have had a hydraulic lock with fresh water and have good deck heights have not had a problem after, big problems arise when antifreeze gets into sump as it eats the metal from the face of mains and big end bearings.

skid had no problems at all getting it going YEAH RIGHT .new head ,2 new rods,etc etc .going now and going better than its ever gone

when it was mentioned he gave the gas a boot just before it stopped was a good hint to those sorts of injuries happening.big diesels will do it just on the starter motor.
