Diesel Bug

Post by DieselBoy »

Whats the go with this stuff??

How do you kill it??

How do you clean the fuels system of it??

How do you stop it from returning??

Long story short, Toyoda's Safari has been sitting in storage for two years with next to no fuel in the tank.

After a small amount of running it has started to cough and splutter at about 3000rpm.

Dropped the fuel filter, scooped out the goo fitted new filter, pulled the gauze out of the pump, scooped the goo out of that and refitted.

Cleaned the gauze on the tank pick up.

Blew back down the fuel line with compressed air.

Dropped a bit of fuel from the tank.

Anything else that can be done??

Whats the best Biocide to stick in the tank to kill what evers left of it???

Dont know what the best stuff is but I've run a few bottles of Morleys Stop Smoke additive through my truck and its made it run a whole lot better. Pretty sure it says on the back that it kills diesel bug.

Its real cheap (repco) compared to the other additives- $15ish per BIG bottle that does lots of tankfulls compared to the opposition that can be $15 for one little bottle that treats one tank.

Not sure how you would remove whats in there though!

When this happened to me I changed the fuel tank. When putting on a new filter fill it with injector cleaner. Put the fuel cleaner in your tank of gas at a high concerntration, I used three bottles of the shit for one tank. Start the pig up with the straight injector cleaner in the fuel filter, this will clean your lines from filter to engine. Give it a good hard drive. Once the tank is used, drain it, refill it with more feul cleaner in it, new fule filter and should be good. I use cleaner every fourth fill now since then. No problems since.

the bug is even thicker when you kill it. seeing as it is a small tank(compared to the ships I work on, cant just dump 70,000 litres)the best thing to do is just drain the tank and remove it, give it a good clean and flush and reinstall. fill with good fuel and change the filters a couple of times.
the best way to store a wagon for long periods is with the tank full to the brim as it is the condensation that provides the environment for the bug, it lives in the layer between water and fuel, using the oxygen from the water and eating the fuel.

bug is normally caught from fuel that has been sitting around for a long time, if you are doing normal running and fill from the pump you should be ok. It is when you start using jerry cans and the like that you will most prob catch it.
Always good to drain any water from your tank every 6 months as well as if there is no water the bug cannot live.
I would suggest that you do not need to put anything in your tank, some people use conditioners and injector cleaner. But I think that it is a bit of a gimmik. I have been a heavy diesel mech for 16 years and if it was good or worked all the big fleets would be running them in their trucks the military would use it as well. but none do. Diesel itself is a great lubricant and has good cleaning properties.
