Spent and committed far too much to the truck for this week.

Got the P plate YUUUK which suits the truck perfectly. It smokes, its filthy, its about to be 1/3rd toyota. Eww.

Went on a mission to north-west Auckland on Thursday night and collected my turbo . I got fantastically lost to the most embarrassing degree mostly because google maps lied about directions .

But its here and I'm happy with the fact I spent more for something brand new and exactly what i was after as opposed to something cheaper, older and compromised.

I bought a red 38mm wastegate. Its a tial copy which was literally 1/3rd the price of genuine. Although many people (especially in the sports car scene) will shudder at the thought of using non-genuine parts; I've had much experience with chinese made stuff and in general there have been few problems. The up side is that if a part does fail (spring, diaphragm) genuine high quality parts DO fit in as replacements.

Also purchased a cheap ball and spring boost controller. The price was incredible off trademe and they are so simple you really cannot go wrong. Ball and spring MBC's work as a pressure regulator and give you a much more responsive turbo system compared to if you used a bleed type valve.

On monday at lunchtime the truck goes into Cartune for an oil change and tune up. The engine will get a good looking at as well as all the tappets adjusted to remove the clattering.
The owner, Kelvin, mentioned that the rockers may be thrashed out and need either cleaning up or replacement which was reassuring as I'd heard of this issue before from other specialists. Its nice knowing that the mechanic in charge knows about any issues before they open things up .
I figured it was time i had things looked at as the chattering was only getting worse and there is no point turbocharging the engine if its going to shit itself from the extra stress.

So.... all this means that over the next few weeks I'm in the perfect position to start building my own exhaust manifold. I considered using an off the shelf cast unit but availability and initial cost + shipping were certainly prohibitive.

So.. This weeks questions are as follows:

-Who in nz/Aus can help with a Turbo cam for the TD42?

-Are there any pre-formed collectors available for purchase to take 6 pipes?

Unless your engine has over 500,000kms on the clock, or you're sure its been poorly maintained in the past (i.e. no oil changes to speak of), then excessive rocker wear to the point where you need to replace them is not too common. Definately take the time checking compression and for excess blow-by before you turbo it.

JPC in Melbourne can source different cams with various amount of lift and duration depending on the turbo setup you intend to use. Is not generally worth it though, unless you're looking for the final few % of performance out of the engine and are using a turbo crank also.

Depending on the cam and the rest of the setup, it may give you 5-7%. Cams are relatively cheap, but unless you find someone who knows what they're doing and can spec the appropriate one, you may be better off spending the $$ elsewhere. The cost to pull down the motor to replace the cam for the sake of it, will be more than the cost of the cam itself.

Like I said, its really only worth it if you're chasing the last few %.

We learnt by doing. It was somewhat disappointing to learn 3 days before Kiwi 2005 that our engine (complete with turbo cam) was a bag of shit, so we stripped it down and put it back to standard....with 28psi of boost of course.

After that, I dealt with JPC to see what they had to offer (thats where the 5-7% comes from), but never bothered in the end as the truck went reasonably well as it was.

I hate to say it, but you really just need to stick a set of 35" muds and a couple of tow hooks and get out there and do some 4wheeling!!!!!!

Otherwise you'l just keep spending and spending and never get out there and do any actual driving

You need to get out more. A set of good Simex's on a Safari act like tractor tyres on a tractor.

I drove mine everywhere on 35's and no turbo. It would spin the wheels in 2nd low, what more do you want??

I've seen three seperate safari's one lwb and two short sink down into average mud with all 4 wheels looking like donuts which was definately average. I made it through the same mud with my 31's spinning like crap

Not trying to argue- just saying what ive seen.

Also- I like having a project- no different to others on here. No need to attack me or have a go- I'm just doing what makes me happy

the good news is that I've now got garage space here and It sounds like the ute cab should be turning up from wayne sometime soon.

yes granted they do need a bit extra power ,had mine 4years 3yrs wiv 35's on,dont really have a prob.just learn to drive with wot u have first and then play wiv stuff on ur truck later on

your truck went bloody well on the weekend. Diddnt seem to have any problems clearing that really sticky coromandal mud.

Tyre choice and tread pattern would have more to do with clearing than a safaris ability to make power to spin them.

But each to their own , I prefer the philosophy of Race it, Break it, Fix it.
Rather than mod mod mod mod and then oh crap the truck out-drives me , bugger I put it on its roof.

Hey just something to consider mate,have you checked the width of the sti seat mounts? I gave my factory seats up for some mint old fxgt seats as they are very narrow in the runner's and almost bolt straight in on top of custom raised mounts.Nice fit between the b-piller and center console too.I spent hours measuring up seats including sti ones,however i wanted the seats to look like they were made for it.

For a little more go and cooler EGT's look into methanol injection.
Im no expert, but brag racers like what it does. I read about it on Outerlimits a few years back, like LPG but better. Google it.


Also, Im all for you modding the snot out it. Gives the next guy something to think about. If you really want to get some practice driving, do it in something you dont care about. Buy a heap, thrash it. Waaaay cheaper too.

Thanks timo . Want to stay as simple as possible so will not spray gas. Will make as much power as i can while keeping reasonable EGT's and will be very happy with that amount

Daily to me still screams too complicated. I had a few, ruined my savings keeping them on the road then bought a de-reg'd Vajero. Great fun.

There was a tidy de-reg single cab lux with a 3y on Tardme the other day, id be on that like white on rice if it were down here.

Id go that route.

Got my hilux cab here now so I can start pissing with that. Left my tools at work so I think i'll go get a cheap tool set tomorrow . Thanks Vvega, Jono and Car Tune for helping so far.

Shit the cab is light!.... and muddy.

Pick up my new doors, chrome grill and manual conversion parts next weekend if all goes to plan.

Will pick up flange and pipe sometime after the 7th when coby is back at work and will attempt this exhaust manifold.

Intake manifold has gone no further as unsure exactly how much space there is under lux bonnet- will make it to suit.

Alright so the cab was sitting on waynes truck until saturday. I'd heard we were gonna be there doing something and sat around home txting him and waiting for a txt back so I could get down there to help.

Suddenly he txts me and says "cabs coming off"

Three of us lifted it off the trailer and onto a pallet in my garage


And then i made it look like a car and test fitted my CF bonnet.. just because I could


Got some tail lights and some dome lights for the interior


Test fitted the LED interior lights and found a nice place for them- I got two of the units off trademe so there will be no need to sit in the dark.


I pulled out the interior (and everything else that wont be used on the truck) and removed the seemingly endless loops of vvega loom and then went to supercheap where I bought 6 cheap caster wheels for the bottom of the pallet to turn it into a trolly. Oh and some degreaser.


I then pushed it outside and waterblasted / degreased it about 3 times.



I must say I'm pretty happy with the cabs complete lack of rust in this thing. I noticed when wayne was working on it that the lower channels had been coated in cavity wax by one of the previous owners and have also found it in the wheel wells (thats what what shit is that i was asking about, wayne. It has the consistency of honey) Plus it has the new roof skin that cost him more than what i paid for the whole body IIRC. Will be nice not having a nissan cab.


Next up I want to get some underseal and re-do the wheel wells and also some black hippo liner to coat the interior (exceot for the tunnel where wayne will be welding and cutting)

Before the hippo liner i'll remove all of the little dangly dash brackets from the firewall and also replace the bar that runs from left to right with a tidy straight bar welded to nice end brackets.

And i need to mount my heater.

And everything else

and theeeeeen.. its back to waiting for wayne

Managed to grab a Racepro Tarmac Evo for not much.



Don't know if it will fit the truck or if the hoops will be a complete pain in the ass- but like i said- the price was right and they are supposed to be very safe.

Picked up two sets of hood pins to hold the bonnet down.

And I took the afternoon off work and have the rest of the week off to whittle down the to-do list.
