Hey guys, so I am in the process of preping a 13b engine (red block) to go into my bj40.It came out of a dyna truck so had a different bell housing and clutch/flywheel and gearbox. To my supprise when I took the bellhousing off the engine the flywheel on the 13b is welded to the flange on the end of the crank. This wouldnt be a problem but this flywheel is bigger than the usual one which is why it is welded (the bolt pattern didnt line up) and so if I use the clutch assembly which is for the bigger flywheel my bellhousing for my original gearbox doesnt fit over.
My question is what would be the best/ easiest solution to fix this.
Is the flange that the flywheel attached to one piece with the crankshaft?
I will probably take a trip into town and get the workshop manual to help me out but it is always good to get the wisdom of you guys.
Option 1: angle cut and or drill the hell out of the flywheel so I can get access to the bolts to take the flange/crank out. Then replace it with the one from the 3b (I have a poached 3b engine I can rip parts from)
Option 2: angle cut/grind the hell out of the flywheel so the flange is as round as possible and then slap the 3b flywheel on with fingers crossed.
Option 3: make an adapter plate for the gearbox side of the bellhousing that came out of the dyna as this bellhousing is shorter.

Re: Flywheel welded to crank 13b

Re: Flywheel welded to crank 13b
There are no easy options as the crankshaft will most likely be out of balance and the welded flywheel may have a wobble as well.
The whole crank and flywheel needs throwing away and replacing
cheers Richard

Re: Flywheel welded to crank 13b
Ok just to clarify im not planning on doing any welding. If I am to remove the crank and replace can I do it from the bottom or do I have to go in from the top? I downloaded a couple of online manuals and they didnt help at all with the removal of the crankshaft.

asuming that the rings and head gasket are in good condition. put motor on engine stand flip it over so sump is upper most. remove sump and then main bearings caps and then cylinder rod caps. before you start disasembly clean all the caps real good and number the whole lot when reasembling they will need to be exactly as they are now. good luck

Re: Flywheel welded to crank 13b
Ha ha I would have to kill sam to get that double cab off his hands. He loves it so much he went and bought himself another one. Sweet looks like im stripping it went out today and nearly completely dissasembled the bottom half of the donor motor to get at the crank.came into some trouble pulling the gear of the cam shaft so I need a gear puller which ill buy 2moro. It is well over due I got one. Sourcing a engine stand at the moment also to make my life a whole lot easier then should be smooth sailing ha ha.
Another quick question, I should use the bearings associated with the crankshaft ie the ones off the donor motor right? and then number then in correct order etc etc since the crank is the moving part?
Also anything else I should replace whilst im amongst all that junk, will replace the main seal I reckon but I think everthing else should be sweet.
And just to double check the crank from a 3b and 13b are the same?? hopefully so
And here's me thinking I would just slap the new clutch and gearbox on and it would slide in, tsk tsk

for the price of a set of bearings I would be replacing the lot while you are there.
